Screen Shot 2012-07-30 at 11.49.47Another day, another new incubator coming out of Germany (in fact, it feels like the whole of Europe has gone a little incubator crazy of late): German Startups Group is a new fund set up by Christoph Gerlinger and Alexander K?lpin, both of whom look well-placed to tap the local 'digital' startup scene in Berlin with investments of between ?50k and ?250k, although it isn't ruling out applications from further afield. Christoph Gerlinger?was founder and CEO of games publisher Frogster before it was acquired by Gamesforge, while K?lpin is a co-founder of BerlinWebWeek and has worked with local startups in a marketing capacity as divisional director of location-markeing agency BerlinPartner.

Smartphones boost phone retail market | SaigonMoney.com - The ...

Smartphones will be the thrust for the mobile phone retail market as up to 42% of Vietnamese consumers say they want to use the high-tech product.

This is the result of a survey on smartphones of Nielsen which was conducted in over 39 countries in Asia and the Pacific, including Vietnam, with an aim to study the popularity of smartphones in this region.

Specifically, there are 70% of Vietnamese consumers using ordinary mobile phones, but 42% of them want to exchange for smartphones in the next six months.

Most of Vietnamese often ask friends, families and colleagues for advice before buying phones. Besides, 39% say they are attracted by phones displayed in shops, and 6% look for information about phones on leaflets.

The survey reveals that the use of smartphones has pushed up the use of mobile Internet, especially with social networks and search tools. Over the past months, nearly 62% of phone users in Vietnam use smartphones to surf the Internet while 23% log in social networks via smartphones.

Speaking of the mobile phone market, Nguyen Van Hoa, deputy general director of the retail chain Vien Thong A, said that smartphones would be the driving force for the market amid the decline in phone buying power since the year?s beginning.

According to Hoa, the market will become bustling with smartphone products in the medium segment with a price range from VND2.8 million to VND3.5 million. In addition, people with less than VND2 million can even buy a phone equipped with basic features of a smartphone.

Sharing the same opinion, Dinh Anh Huan, sales director of thegioididong.com, said that low-cost smartphones would boost the market as consumers still want to own new-technology products despite cutting spending.

Local phone producers have entered the low-cost smartphone segment, such as Touch S01 of Mobistar running on Android, equipped with 5.0 Megapixel camera and sold at under VND3 million, or the dual-SIM smartphone i5 worth VND4.25 million of Viettel and the smartphone F6 worth VND3 million of FPT.

Samsung Galaxy S Duos details make the rounds, bring Galaxy S III vibe to the dual-SIM world

Samsung Galaxy S Duos makes the rounds, bring GS3 vibe to dualSIM world

Fans of Samsung's Duos phones wanting 2012 updates have had to make do with last year's looks so far. From what's surfacing through multiple Indian sites, though, Samsung must want to spread some of the Galaxy S III's modern, nature-influenced style to the Duos' twin-SIM audience. The Galaxy S Duos S7562 won't make its bigger sibling jealous with a 4-inch WVGA display, a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM7227A chip or 512MB of RAM, but they're not the point. As always, the highlight is that pair of SIM slots for carrying both home and work phone lines -- or simply mixing and matching prepaid plans. The rest of the hardware falls in line with what's likely to be a much less expensive smartphone, including a 5-megapixel back camera, a VGA front camera and 4GB of storage. Buyers will be glad to know that Android 4.0 should still be coming along for the ride in addition to that stone-inspired look. We've asked Samsung for more official details; there's talk of an Indian launch before the end of the summer, which (if true) could give the crowds in Bangalore and Mumbai more to look forward to in the fall than just cooler temperatures.

What is Creativity? | Self improvement tips - Fellycaline's blog

Here in England September represents the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn as well as the start of the new school year and the start of many new initiatives in business, life and lots more besides.

When anyone is looking to make any kind of change in their life, often the approach they take needs to become attractive or appealing in order for them to maintain it and often it may not remain attractive or appealing for as long as we like. I get lots of people that tell me that they find it difficult to maintain enthusiasm or keep on investing the required levels of energy in order to make a real success of a project or a goal.

So, for that reason, I want to talk about enhancing creativity today. When you become more creative, you can begin to make more out of your every day experiences and perceptions of what it is that you are doing, you can make life more colourful and have more fun and joy when you are more creative.

So what actually is Creativity?

Good question. We can all be creative; creativity is about making new connections ? and that is literally physiologically true within our neurology. Creativity is the mind?s growing edge. It often involves a lot of discovery. By creating new connections you build your brain power and develop mental and interpersonal flexibility which can begin to heighten your ability to do a huge array of things with more and more ease.

Imagine this; every time you link two things together, you create a third entity. That new connection can itself then connect with other ideas, additional possibilities. Imagine the impact this can have throughout a system like your brain!

Neil Armstrong first stepped onto the moon in 1965. That event changed our beliefs and thoughts about the universe. It also altered thoughts and beliefs about human inventiveness and skill: this event helped us to recognise that if we want something enough, we can find ways to do something that we may have believed to be impossible before. I reckon this gave may people some powerful and liberating thoughts and beliefs about human capability. I heard on the radio recently that there are also plans to land on Mars now! I always fancied being an astronaut.

Being creative on an individual level has the same potential: when you connect things together, you go beyond both of them; and you have the possibility of forming new beliefs about

yourself and your potential. I remember when I was first learning about NLP, hypnosis and my other beloved subjects, I was so excited, I would read so much material that I felt like my brain was literally growing and stretching. That?s not too scary is it?

I love working with children. They have such a vivid imagination, I can remember when I used to play football for hours and days on end as a youngster, I was not just imagining scoring in the World Cup final, I really was actually

there at Wembley Stadium scoring that goal, I am telling you I was there! Children are amazingly creative, each of us has been a child (some still are!). Children show their creativity in the way they discover their environment and make their own meanings of it. Many children create new worlds while playing with toys, they don?t need elaborate or sophisticated toys, equipment or props, the meaning comes from within them; the meaning comes from out of themselves.

You need to give yourself permission and time (and energy) to make new connections and links which is what creativity is all about. It is about the process rather than the outcome or the final product. You can be creative at home or at work, when changing habits, updating behaviours, resolving issues, or just making life happier in any way you can. You can be creative with words, ideas, thoughts, materials, food and the kind of fun you have. You can be creative with your surroundings or with your internal world.

In addition to this, creativity creates something new. That?s right, even if every ingredient is already known to you or is familiar. An insight for example, is creative because the new conclusion is gleaned from information you already had; it is the new perspective that makes the difference.

Above all, being creative returns us to that state where we are scoring goals in World Cup finals. It is about being absorbed and enjoying doing what you are doing, paying attention to detail, having a grand vision, being excited and playful, wondering what would happen if?

Spice Ur Senses: @Bakasur- Eat-Drink & Enjoy

Bakasura, most of us would be sure aware about this epic character from Mahabharata. Bakasura lived only for eating and following the same concept "BAKASUR" chain of restaurants is launched with its first branch at Namma Bangalore.

The place is quite well positioned in close vicinity to SEZ parks on outer ring road near Belandur.?I happened to visit this place along with my friends in its pre-launch opening and be a "Bakasur".?

I like the big opened mouth picture of Bakasur at the entrance and many of you will agree with me. Tables are well spaced and you can be sure that your conversations are not being overheard by people sitting at next table.?

Warm greetings from staff and we decided our table and chose to sit at the corner near the cooking counter. I was quite hungry so without wasting any more time went directly to order food.

?

Menu was sort of limited but seems selectively created as most of items are unique in their name. We decided to go for drinks and few veg/non-veg starters to start with.?

Malai wala Lassi was a hit with its earthen pot serving and believe me it was big to fill your stomach. You must try if you are there. Hariyali murg kabab was quite tender and well cooked. We all enjoyed it and would love it eat again.?

I felt Gosht Kastoori tikka could have been better as it was bit overcooked. Mushroom Galauti & Tandoori Panja Prawn tasted average.?

Aloo Paneer til Bharwan was a disappointment. I wish they could have given more attention on the veg part.?

But nevertheless we enjoyed all the starters along with Lassi.?

With Starters and a big glass of lassi ?the Bakasura? inside us was bit calm now and we spent some time in chit-chat before going for the main course.?

In the main course, we tried mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Probably I have raised my expectation high after the starters which main course could only partially meet.?

Since I am bit oil conscious so could not eat palak puri as it was bit oily but for those who don?t mind oily stuff it?s worth a try.?

Mutton Bheja masala, is one unique item on menu which you won?t find everywhere.

?

Looking around the ambience, i think you will appreciate it too and would like to be there. Music was not too loud and was pleasant to ears but what I came to know is that they have Bakasur theme music which they have planned to play in coming days.

To summarize, in my opinion, ambience is very good, music is pleasant, well spaced tables, good staff, Lassi is must try. I wish they could improve a bit on their main course menu before my next dinner at Bakasur.

(AP) ? Shaken and stirred.

James Bond and the queen teamed to give London a wild Olympic opening like no other.

And creative genius Danny Boyle turned Olympic Stadium into a jukebox, cranking up world-beating rock from the Beatles, the Stones and The Who to send the planet a message: Britain, loud and royal proud, is ready to roll.

Now over to you, athletes. It was a brilliant introduction to kick off a 17-day festival of sports.

Queen Elizabeth II, playing along with movie magic from director Boyle, provided the highlight of the Oscar-winner's high-adrenaline show. With film trickery, Boyle made it seem as if Britain's beloved 86-year-old monarch and its most famous spy parachuted into the stadium together.

Daniel Craig as 007, the queen, playing herself, and her royal corgis starred in a short movie filmed in Buckingham Palace.

"Good evening, Mr. Bond," she said before they were shown flying by helicopter over London landmarks and then leaping ? she in a salmon-colored dress, Bond dashing as ever in a black tuxedo ? into the inky night over Olympic Park.

At the same moment, real skydivers appeared as the stadium throbbed to the James Bond theme. And moments after that, the monarch appeared in person, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip.

Organizers said it was thought to be the first time she has acted on film.

"The queen made herself more accessible than ever before," Boyle said.

Boyle sprang another giant surprise in giving seven teenage athletes the supreme honor of igniting the Olympic flame. Together, they touched torches to trumpetlike tubes that spread into a ring of fire and then rose elegantly to jointly form the cauldron ? which organizers said would be moved Sunday night to one end of the stadium.

It was the end of the journey for the flame. Some 8,000 torchbearers, mostly unheralded Britons, had carried it on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey from toe to tip of the British Isles, whipping up enthusiasm for a $14 billion Olympics taking place during a severe recession. The final torchbearers were kept a closely guarded secret ? remarkable given the scrutiny on these, the first Summer Games of the Twitter era.

The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people, at 8:12 p.m. ? or 20:12 in the 24-hour time observed by Britons.

The show never caught its breath with a nonstop rock-and-pop homage to cool Britannia. The soundtrack veered from classical to irreverent. Boyle daringly included the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and a snippet of its version of "God Save the Queen" ? an anti-establishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC. With a singalong of "Hey Jude," Beatle Paul McCartney closed the spectacle that ran 45 minutes beyond its scheduled three hours.

The encyclopedic review of modern British music included a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham football team, the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," by still another Queen, and other tracks too numerous to mention, but not to dance to.

Boyle, who directed "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting" while developing into one of Britain's most successful filmmakers, had a ball with his favored medium, mixing filmed passages with live action to hypnotic effect, with 15,000 volunteers taking part in the show.

Actor Rowan Atkinson as "Mr. Bean" provided laughs, shown dreaming that he was appearing in "Chariots of Fire," the inspiring story of a Scotsman and an Englishman at the 1924 Paris Games.

Headlong rushes of movie images took spectators on wondrous, heart-racing voyages through everything British: a cricket match, the London Tube, the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation, and along the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the city's rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and industry.

Wearing his yellow winner's jersey, newly crowned Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell. Its thunderous chime was a nod to the British tradition of pealing bells to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens.

Former world heavyweight champion and 1960 Rome Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali also was cheered when he appeared briefly with his wife, Lonnie, before the Olympic flag was unfurled.

The show portrayed idyllic rural Britain ? a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens and picnics ? that then gave way to the industrial transformation that revolutionized the nation in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier live sheep had trod.

The Industrial Revolution also produced terrifying weapons, and Boyle built in a moment of hush to honor those killed in war.

"This is not specific to a country. This is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered," he explained to reporters ahead of the ceremony.

"Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen," he said. "You know, millions fell."

Olympic organizers separately rejected calls for a moment of silence for 11 Israeli athletes and coaches slain by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The parade of nations featured most of the roughly 10,500 athletes ? some planned to stay away to save their strength for competition ? marching behind the flags of the 204 nations taking part.

Greece led, as the spiritual home of the games, and Team Great Britain was last, as host. Prince William and his wife, Kate, joined in thunderous applause that greeted the British team, which marched to the David Bowie track "Heroes." A helicopter showered the athletes and stadium with 7 billion tiny pieces of paper ? one for each person on Earth.

Bahrain and Brunei featured female flagbearers in what has been called the Olympics' Year of the Woman. For the first time at the games, each national delegation includes women, and a record 45 percent of the athletes are women. Three Saudi women marching behind the men in their delegation flashed victory signs with their fingers.

"This is a major boost for gender equality," said International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, overseeing his last games as head of the IOC before he steps down in 2013.

Rogge honored the "great, sports-loving country" of Britain as "the birthplace of modern sport," and he appealed to the thousands of athletes assembled before him for fair play.

"Character counts far more than medals. Reject doping. Respect your opponents. Remember that you are all role models. If you do that, you will inspire a generation," Rogge said.

The queen then said: "I declare open the games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era."

Suspect killed after second Indiana cop shooting

By WTHR and NBC News staff

LAWRENCE, Ind. - A man suspected of shooting an Indiana police officer died in a shootout, police said early Saturday.

K-9 Officer Matt Fox of Fortville, Indiana, was trying to perform a traffic stop on a male driver who refused to stop, police said according to NBC News station WTHR in Indianapolis.?

A pursuit started, ending at a housing subdivision in the 7800 block of Clearview Lane.

Police said Fox was shot through his windshield and was struck in the head and the wrist. He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was said to be alert and talking to officers. Fox was listed in serious but stable condition, awaiting surgery for his injuries.

The incident follows a shooting in the Indiana town of Pendleton on Thursday, in which a bystander was killed and two police officers wounded. A police dog was also killed, and the suspected gunman was found dead early Friday, possibly by a self-inflicted gunshot.

Read the original story at NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis

The suspect in the shooting in Fortville, which is around 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis, then fled the scene and was again chased by police. He stopped near Fox Road and Sunset Cove and got into another shootout with police officers, positioning himself between two buildings and firing at officers as they approached.

Police shot and killed the suspect, according to Hancock County Sheriff's Department dispatchers.

Two officers, one from IMPD and another from Lawrence, were reportedly grazed, either by bullets or shattered glass, but were treated and released at the scene.

The K-9 which Fox handles was not injured and remains at the scene of the shooting.

An IMPD spokesperson tells Eyewitness News a police dog from Lawrence was shot in a patrol car at the second shooting scene. The condition of that K-9 has not yet been confirmed, but the dog was said to be undergoing surgery.

The suspect in the shooting has not yet been identified.

(AP) ? Baffled?

If elements of Danny Boyle's three-hour opening ceremony for the London Olympics went over your head, fear not. We are here to help.

The opening ceremony production is replete with inside jokes and cultural references that many non-Brits may find baffling. The Anglophile dream tour embraces the "Slumdog Millionaire" director's complex and by turns dark and whimsical vision of life on this island nation.

Who else would have thought of dancing nurses?

So read on, all will be clear.

RING THAT BELL

What is it with Britain and bells? Boyle ordered up a 27-ton whopper from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry to ring in the games. Founded in 1570 and officially Britain's oldest manufacturing company, Whitechapel ? just a few miles from the Olympic Park ? also made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell. Boyle loved that ringing a bell to begin a performance was customary at the time of Shakespeare. The bell rung Friday will be inscribed with a line from "The Tempest," in which Caliban says "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises."

NURSES, NURSES, EVERYWHERE

Boyle recruited real nurses working for the National Health Service to take part, a tribute to a treasured national institution that started in 1948 amid the ruins of war-devastated Britain. The state-funded NHS provides free health treatment to all Britons, and is embraced by all political parties. While grumbling about its perceived slow service is widespread ? and planned government reforms are controversial ? its egalitarian ethos is a matter of national pride. When U.S. Republicans criticized the NHS in 2009, a Twitter campaign in its defense became so popular it crashed the NHS website.

WHAT IS JERUSALEM?

Well, there's the one in the Middle East, and then there's "Jerusalem," the hymn that doubles as England's unofficial national anthem, belted out at big state occasions and sports matches alike. It's based on a poem by William Blake, which wonders whether there is truth to the legend that Jesus visited England as a young man: ("And did those feet, in ancient time; walk upon England's mountains green?") Blake ? like Boyle ? contrasts that with a bleaker nation of industrialized "dark Satanic mills," before calling - "Bring me my chariot of fire!" for a new heaven to be built "in England's green and pleasant land."

SPEAKING OF SATANIC MILLS

Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, when transformations in agriculture, transportation and technology brutally reshaped society between 1760 and 1850. Spinning technology led to the creation of textile factories, which was followed by James Watt's invention of the steam engine, and improved coal mining techniques that powered railroads and ships. The advances of the industrial revolution also led to abuses, which sparked riots by workers and eventually spurred the creation of modern organized labor, as well as overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in British cities that triggered outbreaks of cholera and typhoid.

AMAZING ENGINEERS

All that industry made Britain an innovation powerhouse ? and Boyle celebrates its pioneers, past and present. He has drawn inspiration from two Britons whose names many don't know, but whose legacy surrounds us every day ? Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Tim Berners-Lee. Brunel was the pioneering Victorian engineer who helped knit Britain together with an infrastructure of iron bridges and railways. He died in 1859 but many of his creations ? including the first tunnel under the River Thames ? are still in use. Computer scientist Berners-Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web, the infrastructure of the Internet, which is still transforming the way we communicate and the way we live.

TELEVISION GENERATION

Ask Britons from 6 to 60 about their favorite TV show and one answer will probably dominate: "Doctor Who." The series about a space-hopping Time Lord first aired in 1963; so far 11 actors have played its lead character, an enigmatic alien known only as "The Doctor." The show fuses science fiction thrills with humanism and whimsy and is vital suppertime viewing for millions. Its pulsating electronic theme music is instantly recognizable to sci-fi geeks everywhere.

And Boyle would not be reflecting modern-day Britain without a reference to long-running and hugely popular soap operas like "Coronation Street" and "EastEnders." Unlike soaps in many countries, which are set among the wealthy and glamorous, British soaps have gritty working-class backdrops. One British critic once noted that "American soaps are about watching beautiful people suffer. We like to watch ugly people suffer."

CHILDREN'S CLASSICS

From Britain's rich literary tradition, Boyle focuses on its cornucopia of children's classics. British writers gave the world heroes like Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and Harry Potter ? and even-more-memorable villains, from Captain Hook to Cruella de Vil to Voldemort. Perfect material for Boyle, who is drawn to both darkness and light, and directed warm but unsentimental depictions of childhood in the movies "Millions" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

BLOWING BUBBLES?

Despite the British reputation for reserve, get Brits in a crowd ? especially at a sporting event ? and they love to sing. So no ceremony would be complete without a good old-fashioned sing-along. "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" is the anthem of West Ham United football club, but known to almost everyone. It's also an Olympic in-joke: West Ham, an east London team, is bidding to move into the Olympic Stadium once the games are over.

GREAT MOMENTS IN BRITISH WEATHER

Of course Britain's weather HAD to figure in a show about an island nation, with references to BBC radio's daily institution "The Shipping Forecast." Though it provides crucial data for mariners, the forecast is admired for its melodic and soothing chant four times a day. It's a reminder that even in the jet age, Britain is an island nation where much depends on the movement of the sea.

Boyle also pokes fun, reminding the audience of the moment when BBC weatherman Michael Fish assured his audience that a hurricane would bypass Britain's shores. Alas, it did not. The Great Storm of 1987 was the most severe to hit the nation for centuries.

Generics knock AstraZeneca Q2 earnings by 24 pct

(AP) ? Pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca PLC says its net profit fell by 24 percent in the second quarter compared to a year ago as the company lost exclusivity on some of its leading products.

AstraZeneca said Thursday that its net profit for the period was $1.6 billion, down from $2.1 billion a year earlier. Revenue was down 21 percent to $6.66 billion.

The company said the loss of exclusivity accounted for 15 percentage points of the revenue drop. In the United States, the loss of exclusivity on Seroquel IR for bipolar disorder accounted for 80 percent of the fall in revenue.

AstraZeneca shares were down 1.3 percent at 2,871 pence in morning trading in London.

Twitter: Data center problems caused outage

LONDON (AP) ? Twitter blamed systems failures ? not a crush of traffic around the Olympic games ? for an outage on Thursday that saw people around the world experience problems accessing the micro blogging site for more than an hour.

The San Francisco-based company said the outage was caused by a "noteworthy" double failure in its data centers. When one system fails, a parallel one is meant to take over, but two systems coincidentally stopped working at around the same time, Twitter said.

"I wish I could say that today's outage could be explained by the Olympics or even a cascading bug," Mazen Rawashdeh, VP of engineering, said in a statement apologizing to users. "Instead, it was due to this infrastructural double-whammy."

He apologized for giving its users "zilch" instead of the service, saying the company is "investing aggressively" in its systems to avoid a repeat situation.

Visitors to the site on Thursday were greeted with a half-formed message saying that "Twitter is currently down." The fields where a reason for the outage and a deadline for restoring service were apparently meant to go were filled with computer code.

Sluggishness or outages were reported for more than an hour in countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some users were able to post updates through their phones or third-party applications.

Tweets about the Olympic torch, which is wending its way through central London, still poured in, albeit far more slowly than earlier in the day.

When the Olympics open in London on Friday there is expected be an even bigger spike in use of the micro-blogging site.

While the site was affected Thursday, many self-proclaimed "Twitter refugees" flooded Facebook with complaints about Twitter. As usual following outages, "WhileTwitterWasDown" was one of the most-talked about topics on Twitter in the United States. Users cracked jokes about their regained productivity as a result of the downtime ? or going outside to get some sunshine.

Twitter said in March that it has more than 140 million active users and that the service sees 340 million Tweets a day.

It was once notorious for its down times, but has since improved its performance. Still, the sheer popularity of the site ? and its heavy use by up-to-the-second journalists ? mean that even modest outages quickly become news. In June, Twitter experienced problems that lasted about two hours. The company blamed a technical glitch.

Social networking sites are expected o receive an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans during the Olympics. At the recent UEFA European Football Championship final, users fired off more than 15,000 tweets per second, setting a sports-related record for the site.

Social media users were already complaining about an earlier outage that affected Google's chatting services. The Mountain View, California-based company said Thursday morning that the majority of users were seeing error messages and unable to use its Google Talk service. The issues were resolved five hours later.

(AP) ? As police officers pleaded for all available medics to converge on the scene of the Colorado movie theater massacre last week, a two-man ambulance crew and their rig were idling just a few miles away.

While some ambulances were quickly called to duty, it took dispatchers more than 20 minutes into the crisis to ask the Cunningham Fire Protection District and other nearby agencies to provide aid at the multiplex in the Denver suburb of Aurora.

By the time the Cunningham crew arrived, it was more than a half hour after authorities got first word that a gunman opened fire at a packed midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others.

Radio traffic from last Friday showed emergency personnel struggling to grasp both the scope of the tragedy and mobilize a response. The ambulance delays came during crucial minutes for the injured victims, though it's not clear whether a faster response would have saved more lives.

Officials have declined so far to release call records of the response, and the Aurora Fire Department declined to discuss the handling of ambulances from that night.

Experienced emergency responders say no response will ever be perfect. Residents in the Denver area are well aware of the turmoil that comes with mass tragedies, as police were criticized in 1999 for waiting outside Columbine High School instead of immediately pursuing two gunmen who went on a killing rampage inside.

"You always find things that you can improve the next time," said Robert Finn, a retired police and fire chief from the Dallas area who added that officials will usually conduct a post-incident analysis after big tragedies.

On the police radio transmissions, officers said they lacked sufficient medical support for about 30 minutes after the 911 calls came flooding in around 12:39 a.m. and that medical teams didn't report getting inside the theater for about 24 minutes. It wasn't clear whether police efforts to secure the multiplex contributed to the delay in getting medical teams inside.

Dispatchers began their response by quickly sending one ambulance to the scene, followed by another about three and a half minutes into the response. A third ambulance soon followed.

Over the next several minutes, first responders reported on the extent of the casualties, calling in the numbers of wounded in their areas: One said three were shot in one location. Another said someone was shot twice in the back. A third asked that rescue personnel go into the theater to help "multiple victims."

About nine minutes in, one officer in an urgent voice declared bluntly: "I need as many ambulances as we can." Four had been dispatched at that time, according to one person on the scanner traffic.

An officer said he was going to take a victim in his car.

Eleven minutes in, a first responder again barks: "Dispatch, get me some ambulances!" A coordinator replied that Rural/Metro ? the private ambulance provider for the area that also declined comment on the response ? was sending all available units in Aurora.

The Cunningham unit, however, had not been called and sat idle for 10 more minutes. The department operates separately from Aurora officials but coordinates with them on a near-daily basis.

District Fire Chief Jerry Rhodes said one of his units on duty that night had no idea about the turmoil unfolding a few miles away, in part, because they were likely sleeping due to the 24-hour-long shifts they typically staff.

Rhodes said the district's crew, including one paramedic and one emergency medical technician, received the plea for help at 1 a.m. ? about 21 minutes after officers first began rushing to the scene.

Denver Health Paramedics, which had two ambulances on the eastern side of Denver that is closest to Aurora, got its call to provide support three minutes after Cunningham. One of the units was eight minutes away.

West Metro Fire Rescue also got a similar call to send medical support ? 15 minutes after the Cunningham request.

Medical teams that were first to arrive appeared to deal with the wounded as they came upon them, which meant first handling the moviegoers who made it outside. That left other severely wounded patients inside the facility.

While fire officials in Aurora declined to comment about how they responded, Deputy Chief Chris Henderson told reporters after a brief memorial service Wednesday night that the firefighters did an incredible job.

"The lives that were saved that night. That's the comfort you take from this," Henderson said.

Scot Phelps, an experienced paramedic who works at an emergency management academy in New York, said it was clear that the lack of ambulance transport was a problem in Aurora. He said that could be due in large part to the structure of modern emergency systems, which he said are poorly funded, leaving few ambulances readily available.

Before the aid call went out to the other agencies, officers repeatedly implored dispatchers for more medical support and bemoaned the resources they had at their disposal. At one point, they also asked for an accounting of what resources were on the way.

"To be honest with you, sir, I don't know an exact count of ambulances," one person said. They added that two more ambulances were getting dispatched then.

Over the span of 10 minutes, officials mentioned multiple times the situation of a child who they could not evacuate from the theater and needed rescue. About 15 minutes in, one officer asked whether he had permission to take victims with his car.

"I have a whole bunch of people shot out here and no rescue," he said in a hurried tone. The response came immediately: "Yes, load them up, get them in cars and get them out of here."

At 18 and 20 minutes in, police coordinators repeated their calls for more medical assistance. At 27 minutes, an officer was still reporting that they were loading patients into the back of patrol cars. "Any ambos we could get would be nice," he said.

Thirty minutes into the chaos, an on-scene commander made a final, exasperated plea. He asked about Cunningham's resources and whether another private company in the area ? AMR.

"Anybody else that's in the area that we can contact?" he asked. "Maybe Cunningham? Somebody that we can get a hold of? AMR? Anybody?"

The response came back from a woman's voice that sounding equally worn. "We're working on finding additional transport rigs to assist us with transporting from the scene," she said.

Peugeot Citroen in H1 loss as Europe hits business

PARIS (AP) ? Tough conditions in Europe pushed carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen into a first half loss of ?819 million ($990 million), just as the company faces off with the French government over its restructuring plan.

The maker of two-thirds of France's cars is in a tailspin as a deepening recession in many markets in Europe takes its toll on its business ? Europe is Peugeot's main market. The company's share price has more than halved since March.

The first-half loss contrasts starkly with a profit of ?805 million in the same period last year and came on the back of a 5.1 percent fall in revenue to ?29.6 billion.

The company doesn't expect Europe to pick up anytime soon, saying Wednesday that it expects its European market to contract by 8 percent this year.

In response, Peugeot announced earlier this month that it would close a major factory in France and cut 8,000 jobs ? part of a plan to save ?2.5 billion by 2015. Those savings will also come from efficiencies gained by an alliance with General Motors. About half ? ?1 billion ? of those savings will come this year alone.

"The group is facing a difficult time," Chairman Philippe Varin said. "The depth and persistence of the crisis impacting our business in Europe requires the launch of the reorganization of our French production and a reduction in our structural costs."

But the company's cost-cutting plans have run afoul of President Francois Hollande's Socialist administration, which has said the restructuring is unacceptable and that it will force Peugeot to save some of the jobs it wants to eliminate.

On Wednesday, the government will unveil a plan to support the auto industry ? part of its carrot-and-stick strategy with Peugeot. It's expected to give incentives to French consumers to buy French cars and to support the clean-energy vehicles that the company excels at.

But much of Peugeot's problems stem from an over-supplied European car market, and it's unclear how much the government can do for the company. France's car industry was already given a bailout under former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Washington history museum plans DB Cooper exhibit - KHQ Right ...

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State History Museum in Tacoma plans to open an exhibit in August of next year on the D.B. Cooper skyjacking mystery.

State Historical Society Director Jennifer Kilmer told The Daily News (http://is.gd/PkXK5o ) it's part of an emphasis on more contemporary events.

A man identifying himself as Dan Cooper hijacked a Portland to Seattle flight in November 1971. He picked up $200,000 in ransom money in Seattle and took off for Mexico, then parachuted somewhere over southwest Washington. The skyjacking remains unsolved, but some of the marked $20 bills he was given were found in 1980 along the Columbia River.

The exhibit will include some of the money. It also will illustrate features of an old Boeing 727 that have been changed in modern planes to prevent skyjackings.

miR-122: Loss of tiny liver molecule might lead to liver cancer

A new study shows that loss of a small RNA molecule in liver cells might cause liver cancer and that restoring the molecule might slow tumor growth and offer a new way to treat the disease.

The animal study was led by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC ? James).

The scientists examined what happens when liver cells lack a molecule called microRNA-122 (miR-122). They found that when the molecule is missing, the liver develops fat deposits, inflammation and tumors that resemble hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.

When the researchers artificially restored miR-122 to nearly normal levels by delivering the miR-122 gene into liver cells, it dramatically reduced the size and number of tumors, with tumors making up 8 percent on average of liver surface area in treated animals versus 40 percent in control animals.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"These findings reveal that miR-122 has a critical tumor-suppressor role in the healthy liver, and they highlight the possible therapeutic value of miR-122 replacement for some patients with liver cancer," says study leader Dr. Kalpana Ghoshal, associate professor of pathology and a member of the OSUCCC ? James Experimental Therapeutics Program.

More than 28,700 new cases of HCC are expected in the United States in 2012, and 20,550 Americans are expected to die of the malignancy. Major risk factors for HCC include hepatitis B and C virus infection and liver damage due to alcohol use. HCC is curable if caught early, but most cases are diagnosed at a late, incurable stage.

MiR-122 is found mainly in liver cells ? it is the most abundant microRNA in those cells ? and it plays a major role in regulating cholesterol in the body. This microRNA is lost in some people with HCC, however, resulting in a poor prognosis.

For this study, Ghoshal and her colleagues developed a strain of mice that lacks miR-122 and develops HCC through the progression of events that begins with fatty liver deposits followed by inflammation and liver cancer.

The researchers then used a second strain of mice that spontaneously develops liver cancer due to overexpression of a cancer-causing gene called MYC (pronounced "mick"). The researchers delivered miR-122 into the animals' livers during tumor development. Three weeks later, those treated with the molecule had smaller and fewer tumors.

"The model we developed for these studies will not only facilitate our understanding of liver biology, but it will also be good for testing therapeutic efficacy of newly developed drugs against liver disease, including HCC," Ghoshal says.

Ghoshal also notes that research by others has shown that hepatitis C virus requires miR-122 for replication. "Because our findings demonstrate what happens when miR-122 is lost in liver cells, they might help improve the safety of new drugs that treat hepatitis C virus infection by blocking miR-122," she says.

Ghana VP sworn in hours after president's death

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? President John Atta Mills' election victory secured Ghana's reputation as one of the most mature democracies in West Africa, a position further solidified Tuesday when the vice president took over only hours after the 68-year-old president died five months before finishing his first term.

John Mahama's swift inauguration underscored Ghana's stability in a part of the world where the deaths of other leaders have sparked coups.

"We are deeply distraught, devastated as a country," Mahama said after his swearing-in ceremony, where he raised the golden staff of office above his head.

Ghanaian state-run television stations GTV and TV3 broke into their regular programming to announce the president's death Tuesday afternoon. Government officials did not release the cause of his death, which came three days after his 68th birthday.

Rumors had swirled about Atta Mills' health in recent months after he made several trips to the United States, and opposition newspapers had reported he was not well enough to run for a second term.

Some radio stations even announced that he was dead during one of his recent trips to the States. When Atta Mills returned to Ghana, he jogged at the airport and blasted those who had falsely reported his death.

On the streets of Cape Coast, kilometers (80 miles) from Accra, people held radios to their ears on the street, listening to the funeral hymns playing on FM stations and waiting for more information about the president's unexpected death.

"His speeches were full of a spirit of love and peace," said Efua Mensima, 45. "He was soft-spoken. I wept when I heard of his death."

In a predominantly Ghanaian section of Ivory Coast's commercial capital, a group of 10 men tried to organize a bus to take them to Ghana for the president's funeral.

"The Ghanaian people were happy with this president and his program for the development of the country," said Nour Ousmane Aladji, 27, a taxi driver who moved to Abidjan in 2000.

Chris Fomunyoh, the senior director for Africa for the Washington-based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, said that Ghana's democracy could weather the death of a president.

In other nations in West Africa, the death of a ruler usually spells a coup, as it did in neighboring Guinea following the 2008 death of longtime dictator Lansana Conte, and Togo, where the military seized power after the president's death in 2005 in order to install the leader's son.

"Ghanaian democracy has been tested and its institutions function well," said Fomunyoh. "There's no reason to think that Ghana and its democracy will not handle this event properly."

Atta Mills was elected in a 2008 runoff vote that was the closest in the country's history ? and his third presidential bid.

"People are complaining. They're saying that their standard of living has deteriorated these past eight years," he told The Associated Press at the time. "So if Ghana is a model of growth, it's not translating into something people can feel."

He went on to serve as president as Ghana began grappling with how to deal with its newfound oil wealth from offshore fields discovered in the last five years. The country of about 25 million saw a growth rate of more than 14 percent last year, though some analysts say the handling of his time in office was less than stellar.

The government got involved in a dispute with Kosmos Energy, the owner of the country's Jubilee oil field, a spat that resulted in a delay in the proceeds from the country's nascent oil trade, said Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council.

Atta Mills also was one of the only leaders in West Africa who didn't back plans for an intervention force during last year's near-civil war in Ivory Coast. Because of its shared border, Ghana became the main smuggling route for Ivorian cocoa.

The late president spent much of his career teaching at the University of Ghana. He earned a doctorate from London's School of Oriental and African Studies before becoming a Fulbright scholar at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Atta Mills also served as vice president under Jerry Rawlings, a coup leader who was later elected president by popular vote and surprised the world by stepping down after the 2000 vote.

Richard Downie, the deputy director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that Atta Mills may be remembered more for what his election in 2008 symbolized than for what he did as president.

"It showed just how robust Ghana's democracy was, and it proved here in the U.S. what a success Ghana had become in terms of its political maturity," he said.
