Red Sox complete four-game sweep of Astros

BOSTON (AP) - The young Houston Astros are hoping they can grow up quickly.

Losing for the 18th time in 25 games to start their inaugural season in the American League, the Astros dropped a 6-1 decision to the Red Sox that completed Boston's four-game series sweep.

"We've been battling and we wanted to put a `W' up there. But we've got to put it behind us and get ready for the next day and try to end this skid," losing pitcher Bud Norris said.

"It's early though. It's a long haul. I know I've got a lot of work ahead of me. We've got to take it one game at a time, put it behind us and keep learning. We're here to put our work in. We're a young squad. We're learning."

Norris (3-3) struck out six for Houston and allowed five runs - three earned - in six innings.

After giving up a run in the first, Norris held Boston scoreless until allowing two each in the fourth and fifth. The two in the fifth were unearned after shortstop Marwin Gonzalez misplayed a grounder and threw it away for another error on the first batter.

Like almost everything this month, the Astros are just looking for any positives despite the long weekend in Fenway Park.

"We've got to. You've got to put positive rocks in your bucket," Norris said. "You can't put negative ones in there. You've got to learn from your mistakes - mental or physical. We've got to learn and get better.

"That's the learning process we know we're a part of. Once we get over that hump and turn those close games into wins, and the ball bounces our way, or we get the call, someday it will click and it'll turn it around. We know it'll happen someday."

It was the third time the Astros were swept in a series this season. They've also lost seven of their past nine games heading into a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Monday night.

"It's over. A new game tomorrow and that's all you can focus on," outfielder Rick Ankiel said. "You just hope that everybody's learning when you're out there and going through different situations, whether it be a feel or a situation mentally, you just hope everybody is learning something."

John Lackey returned from the disabled list and pitched six solid innings, David Ortiz drove in two runs and the Red Sox matched a team record with their 18th win in April.

Lackey (1-1) missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery and went on the DL after leaving his first start this year with a strained right biceps. He allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two. The two walks came with two outs in the first and cost Lackey his only run.

Stephen Drew hit a two-run triple and Ortiz had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 20 games going back to last season. Ortiz has 11 RBIs and is batting .516 in eight games since returning to the lineup last weekend.

Houston left nine runners on base and was 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday. The Astros were just 5 for 38 in the series.

Ronny Cedeno drove in Houston's only run with a single in the first after Lackey had walked Jason Castro and Carlos Pena with two outs.

The Astros loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on consecutive singles by Castro, Pena and Cedeno, but Lackey got himself out of the jam by striking out Fernando Martinez and getting Matt Dominguez to ground into a fielder's choice.

The Red Sox also left the bases loaded in the first after Ortiz's RBI single scored Daniel Nava, who doubled with one out.

The missed opportunity didn't hurt Boston as the Red Sox scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Mike Napoli led off the fourth with a blooper down the right field line and tried to stretch into a double, but former pitcher Rick Ankiel's throw reached second well before Napoli and shortstop Gonzalez made the tag for the out.

The Red Sox still got two runs in the inning. Mike Carp and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back singles and scored easily when Drew - batting .136 coming in - tripled down the right field line and the Red Sox took their first lead at 3-1.

In the fifth, Gonzalez bobbled a grounder by Nava and his hurried throw sailed well over first baseman Pena, then the Boston dugout. The mistakes were costly when Dustin Pedroia drove in Nava with a double. Carp added a two-out double to score Pedroia for a 5-1 lead.

NOTES: The Astros are 2-11 against Boston all time and winless in seven games at Fenway. ... Jose Altuve went 0 for 4, ending his streak of reaching base in 17 straight games. ... The series sweep is the second this season for the Red Sox, who also swept Cleveland.

Google invades Siri's turf with iPhone, iPad app

(AP) ? Siri may be feeling a little job insecurity. The sometimes droll assistant that answers questions and helps people manage their lives on Apple's iPhone and iPad is facing competition from an up-and-coming rival made by Google.

The duel began Monday with the release of a free iPhone and iPad app that features Google Now, a technology that performs many of the same functions as Siri.

It's the first time that Google Now has been available on smartphones and tablet computers that aren't running on the latest version of Google's Android software. The technology, which debuted nine months ago, is being included in an upgrade to Google's search application for iOS, the Apple Inc. software that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It's up to each user to decide whether to activate Google Now within the redesigned Google Search app, which is available through Apple's app store.

Siri tried to dismiss the competitive threat. When asked for an opinion about Google Now, Siri responded: "If it's all the same to you, I'd rather Google later."

Mike Allton, a St. Charles, Mo., resident who has owned an iPhone for four years, could hardly wait to check out Google Now, even if Siri might interpret it as a betrayal.

Siri "is looking a little green with envy," Allton, 36, said with a laugh after he installed Google's new app. "I love Apple products, but I like to see the competition because it probably will lead to even more improvements. I believe this technology is going to be even more deeply ingrained in our lives a few years from now."

Other iPhone users ? even those who have grown fond of Siri ? welcomed Google Now's arrival to iOS in mostly enthusiastic and sometimes amusing remarks posted on Twitter and Google Plus. One person joked that Google Now is so helpful that the technology prompted him to wash his hands after using the bathroom. The biggest gripe was about the possibility of Google Now's location-tracking features draining a device's battery more quickly.

Google Now's invasion of Siri's turf marks Google Inc.'s latest attempt to lure iPhone and iPad users away from a service that Apple built into its own devices.

Google quickly won over millions of iPhone users in December when it released a mapping application to replace the navigation system that Apple dumped when it redesigned iOS last fall. Apple's maps application proved to be inferior to Google's ousted service. The app's bugs and glitches made Apple the butt of jokes and fueled demand for Google to develop a new option.

Apple has been losing to Google on other fronts in a rapidly growing mobile computing market, an arena that was revolutionized with the iPhone's release in 2007. Smartphones and tablet computers running Google's free Android software have been steadily expanding their market share in recent years, partly because they tend to be less expensive than the iPhone and iPad. In 2012, Android devices held about 69 percent of the smartphone market while iOS had about 19 percent, according to the research firm IDC.

Android's success has been particularly galling for Apple because its late CEO, Steve Jobs, believed Google stole many of its ideas for the software from the iPhone. That led to a series of court battles over allegations of patent infringement, including a high-profile trial last year that culminated in Apple winning hundreds of millions in damages from Samsung Electronics, the top seller of Android phones. That dispute is still embroiled in appeals.

The rise of Android also is squeezing Apple's profit margins and has contributed to a nearly 40 percent drop in the company's stock price since it peaked at $705.07 last September around the time that the iPhone 5 came out.

Android's popularity is good news for Google because the company's services are built into most versions of the operating system. That brings more traffic to Google services, creating more opportunities for the company to sell ads ? the main source of Google's revenue.

Siri is billed by Apple as an "intelligent feature." Since the technology's release in October 2011, Apple has made it a centerpiece of some marketing campaigns that depict Siri and its automated female voice as an endearing and occasionally even pithy companion.

Google believes its Siri counterpart is smarter because Google Now is designed to learn about a user's preferences and then provide helpful information before it's even asked to do so. The technology draws upon information that Google gleans from search requests other interactions with the company's other services. Knowing a person's location also helps Google Now serve up helpful information without being asked.

"This concept of predicting your needs and showing you them at the right time is unique to Google Now," said Baris Gultekin, Google Now's director of product management. "We want computers to do the hard work so our users can focus on what matters to them so they can get on with their lives."

If the technology is working right, Google Now is supposed to do things like automatically tell people what the local weather is like when they wake up to help decide what to wear and provide a report on traffic conditions for the commute to work. During the day, Google Now might provide an update on the score of a user's favorite sports team or a stock quote of a company in a user's investment portfolio. On a Friday evening, Google Now might offer suggestions for movies to see or other weekend events tailored to a user's interests. For international travelers, Google Now might provide currency conversion rates, language translations of common phrases and the time back home.

Most of this automatic information is provided in summaries that Google calls "cards." Like Siri, Google Now also is equipped with voice technology that allows it to respond to questions and interact with users, though it hasn't shown the wit that delights some of Siri's users.

The Google Now app for iOS isn't as comprehensive as the Android app, which only works on devices running on the latest version of Android ? known as "Jelly Bean." Some of the Android features missing from Google Now's iOS app include cards for showing airline boarding passes and movie tickets bought though online vendor Fandango. Both of those options are available on the iOS through Apple's built-in Passbook feature that's designed to be a digital wallet.

Google Now's expansion on to the iOS underscores Google's ambitions for the service. The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., views it as a pivotal tool in its effort to peer deeper into its users' brains. In doing so, Google believes it will be able to provide more useful services and also show more relevant ads. For Google Now to become more intuitive, it needs to widen its availability.

"The more you use Google Now, we will have a better chance of understanding what your needs are and providing you with the right information," Gultekin said. "It's a virtuous cycle."

Shawn Jacob, a student at the University of North Texas, activated Google Now on his iPhone Monday and was startled by how much the service already knew about him when he logged in for the first time. "I was blown away," Jacob, 21, said. "It made me wonder if I really want Google to know this much about me. It's like Google wants to take over the world."

Gultekin declined to discuss whether there are plans to make Google Now apps for mobile devices running on Microsoft's Windows system. He also refused to comment on speculation circulating in technology blogs that a Web version of Google Now will be offered as a replacement for iGoogle, a tool that allows people to encircle the Google search engine with a variety of services suited to their tastes. IGoogle is scheduled to close in November.

Lonely year for French president at time of crisis

(AP) ? The sounds of raucous protest echo in the Presidential Palace, unemployment is rising to levels not seen in over a decade, and his country's economy has been called a potential time bomb at the heart of Europe.

Francois Hollande, among the most unpopular French leaders in modern history, remains calm.

Lacking the early-career charisma of President Barack Obama or the hard-nosed reputation of Germany's Angela Merkel, Hollande rose to power in the Socialist Party as a consensus-builder ? someone who went out of his way to avoid confrontation. But the amiability that propelled him to the presidency a year ago is turning against Hollande, as poll after poll finds deep disappointment among many who believe he is incapable of the swift, determined choices needed to yank France out of a malaise he himself says threatens generations to come.

"I remain solid and serene," Holland told a handful of journalists in his office at the Presidential Palace, above the shouts of a crowd demonstrating against his plan to legalize gay marriage. Without camouflaging the difficulties, he admitted it's been a trying year. "I grasp the seriousness ? it's the task of the president to remain steady and to see further than the storms of a moment. It's called perseverance."

Judgment, he said in the interview earlier this month, will come only at the end of his five-year term.

But, seated comfortably in his office armchair, Hollande insisted he was anything but indecisive.

"My will is to pull the country together and restore its confidence. This will take time, but I have no other goal," he said. "You can criticize my decisions, think that I'm on the wrong path, say I'm foundering, but if there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that I've made major choices for France in the past year."

He cited the accord reached in January between unions and business leaders to relax some of France's famously strict labor protections. Hollande had championed the agreement, saying the costs and difficulties of hiring in France were hurting its ability to compete globally. But unemployment has only risen since then, and the brief optimism generated by the agreement ? which is expected to become law by next month ? has since faded. This week, it reached 10.6 percent, the highest level since 1999.

Hollande talks a lot about the French intervention in Mali, by far his most popular act in office. But, despite Hollande's best efforts, France was alone among European countries in sending soldiers, and French forces outnumbered any Africans sent to win Mali back from the militants who threatened to seize the entire country.

"I became president at an exceptional time," said Hollande, who tends to speak deliberately and formally even in relaxed settings. "Exceptional on the economic front: a long crisis, a recession in Europe, unemployment at historic levels. Exceptional because I was forced to engage France in Mali. Exceptional because populism is taking hold, not just in France, but throughout Europe."

Bernard Poignant, a Socialist who is Hollande's friend of 30 years and also one of his advisors, said the president started his term at a hugely difficult moment for his leftist base.

"Traditionally the left, when it comes to power, is generous, redistributive of wealth," he said. "Today, it's the reverse. The right emptied the coffers and now the left must fill them."

Economists say that France's predicament stems neither from the country's right or left, but from generations of benefits that few politicians are willing to take away. Hollande's predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, only half-heartedly tried to raise the work week from 35 hours, then pulled back even before strong opposition emerged.

Hollande cautiously broached the idea of pulling back some of the subsidies that now go to all parents of young children, exempting families who earn high incomes. But the 35-hour work week remains in place, as does the retirement age of 62. Health care remains universal and nearly all treatments are reimbursed at least partially. Hollande has said he will not thin the ranks of government employees. France will remain among the countries with the highest percentage of public workers in the world ? about 20 percent of the workforce gets a government paycheck and a government pension.

Hollande was elected as "president normal," an unassuming contrast to Sarkozy's flashy, aggressive style, and his dramatic divorce and marriage to the model and singer Carla Bruni. But a year into his term, his amiability has managed to turn most of the country against him, even within his own camp. Numerous Socialist lawmakers are openly speaking against him, for example, for demanding they publish their assets.

The president appears to relish simple, easy contact with the French. He can spend hours happily shaking hands, telling stories, joking. But those moments are becoming increasingly rare.

"He is consumed by his responsibilities, too consumed, in my opinion," said Poignant. "The political climate is such that the president is becoming the target of protests. We have to protect him for security reasons: It is very difficult for him to be close to the French."

Only about one in four French approve of the job Hollande is doing, lower than either of his conservative predecessors.

He says he is willing to wait for that to change, describing his five-year term in two phases: things will be very difficult in the first phase, then a return to growth and the Socialist preference toward more government spending. His advisors ? and most economists ? say privately they don't expect much good news for France before 2015.

"The French have always turned to the president. He is accountable to them, and that's as it should be. My actions are measured at this particular moment in our country's history," he said. "I remain in control of myself, confident in what I think."

Mohammed Sohel Rana was arrested in Benapole in western?Bangladesh, just as he was about to flee into India's West Bengal state, said Jahangir Kabir Nanak, junior minister for local government. Rana was brought back by helicopter to the capital Dhaka where he faced charges of negligence.

Rana's capture by the Rapid Action Battalion brought cheers and applause when it was announced on a loudspeaker at the site of the collapsed building in the Dhaka suburb of Savar, where search and rescue operations were continuing through the night.

At least 377 people are confirmed to have died in the collapse of the 8-story building on Wednesday. Three of its floors were built illegally. The death toll is expected to rise but it is already the deadliest tragedy to hit Bangladesh's?garment industry, which is worth $20 billion annually and is a mainstay of the economy. The collapse and previous disasters in garment factories have focused attention on the poor working conditions of workers who toil for as little as $38 a month to produce clothing for top international brands.

Disheveled, sweating

Rana was presented before the media briefly at the commando force's headquarters in Dhaka. Wearing a printed shirt, an exhausted and disheveled Rana was sweating as two security officers held him by his arms. A security official helped him to drink water after he gestured he was thirsty. He did not speak to the media during the 10-minute appearance after which he was taken away. He is likely to be handed over to local police who will have to charge him and produce him in court within 24 hours.

A small-time politician from the ruling party, Rana had been on the run since Wednesday. He last appeared in public in front of his Rana Plaza on Tuesday after huge cracks appeared in the building. However, he assured tenants, including five garment factories, that the building was safe, according to witnesses.

A bank and some shops on the first floor shut their premises on Wednesday after police ordered an evacuation, but managers of the garment factories on the upper floor told workers to continue their shifts.

Hours later, Rana Plaza was reduced to rubble, crushing most victims under massive blocks of concrete and mortar. A garment manufacturers' group said the factories in the building employed 3,122 workers, but it was not clear how many were inside it when it collapsed. About 2,500 survivors have been accounted for.

On Sunday, rescuers were supposed to start using heavy equipment to drill a central hole from the top to look for survivors and dead bodies. But the operation was delayed after rescuers located a woman inside the building, and were trying to pull her out.

Army Maj. Gen. Chowdhury Hasan Suhrawardy, the coordinator of the rescue operations, said so far rescuers have been manually shifting concrete blocks with the help of light equipment such as pickaxes and shovels.

The next phase will involve manual efforts as well as heavy equipment, including hydraulic cranes and cutters to bore a hole from the top of the collapsed building, he told reporters.

The purpose is to "continue the operation to recover both survivors and dead bodies. In this stage, we have no other choice but to use some heavy equipment. We will start it within a few hours. Manual operation and use of small equipment is not enough," he said.

The work will be carried out carefully so as not to mutilate bodies, he said. All the equipment is in place, "from a small blade to everything. We have engaged many private sector companies which supplied us equipment, even some heavy ones."

Woman pulled out alive

In rare good news, a female worker was pulled out alive on Sunday. Hasan Akbari, a rescuer, said when he tried to extricate a man next to the woman, "he said his body was being torn apart. So I had to let go. But God willing, we will be able to rescue him with more help very soon."

On Saturday, police arrested three owners of two factories. Also under detention are Rana's wife and two government engineers who were involved in giving approval for the building design. Local television stations reported that the?Bangladesh?High Court has frozen the bank accounts of the owners of all five garment factories in the collapsed building.

Rana was a local leader of ruling Awami League's youth front. His arrest, and that of the factory owners, was ordered by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the Awami League leader.

The disaster is the worst ever for the country's booming and powerful garment industry, surpassing a fire five months ago that killed 112 people and brought widespread pledges to improve worker-safety standards. But since then very little has changed in?Bangladesh, where low wages have made it a magnet for numerous global brands.

Bangladesh's?garment industry was the third largest in the world in 2011, after China and Italy, having grown rapidly in the past decade. The country's minimum wage is the equivalent of about $38 a month.

7 million pieces a year

Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style, and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants, and other garments a year.

The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for several major North American and European retailers.

Britain's Primark acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza, but many other retailers distanced themselves from the disaster, saying they were not involved with the factories at the time of the collapse or had not recently ordered garments from them.

Wal-Mart said none of its clothing had been authorized to be made in the facility, but it is investigating whether there was any unauthorized production.

* AP writers Farid Hossain and Gillian Wong in Dhaka contributed to this report.

Samsung Electronics profit jumps ahead of Galaxy S4 debut

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd reported on Friday its sixth straight quarter of profit growth ahead of the debut of its latest Galaxy smartphone, the South Korean IT giant's biggest assault on rival Apple Inc yet.

By launching the Galaxy S4 in the United States on Saturday, Samsung is taking aim at Apple's home market at a time when the iPhone maker appears to have hit a snag. Earlier this week, Apple reported its first profit decline in more than a decade and indicated no major product releases until the fall.

Samsung is widely expected to resume posting record quarterly profits, after a hiatus in January-March, as the S4 is dispatched to 327 mobile carriers in 155 countries.

This week, Samsung has kicked off a massive advertising campaign for the S4 and set up mini stores at Best Buy locations to promote the smartphone. Initial orders have surprised on the upside, with the firm expecting a short-term supply crunch.

Early success of the S4 is crucial in determining the extent of the expected second-quarter record earnings for a company that gets more than 70 percent of its overall profit from mobile devices.

The new S4, which sports a host of software-enabled features, is seen as stealing a head-start on what's widely expected to be an upgraded iPhone later this year. But the Galaxy phone has drawn mixed reviews so far.

Profit from Samsung's mobile division jumped 56 percent to a record 6.51 trillion won in the first quarter, accounting for nearly three quarters of the firm's entire profit, the company said on Friday, before the stock market open.

Samsung, which doesn't provide smartphone sales figures, likely sold 68-70 million smartphones in the quarter ended March, up from 63 million in the previous quarter, according to five analysts.

By contrast, second-ranked Apple said on Tuesday it shipped 37.4 million iPhones in the March quarter, up from 35.1 million a year ago, but down sharply from 47.8 million in the previous quarter.

Samsung's first-quarter overall operating profit increased 54 percent from a year ago to 8.8 trillion won ($7.9 billion), broadly in line with its earlier estimate and almost on par with the fourth-quarter's record of 8.84 trillion won.

Shares in Samsung, valued at around $215 billion, have risen 2 percent in the past three months, beating a 21 percent decline in Apple and a 1 percent drop in the wider market.

Attacks kill 8 from Iraq security forces

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say attackers have killed eight members of the security forces, including five anti-al-Qaida militiamen, amid rising sectarian violence in the country.

Police said that the first attack occurred early Saturday when gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint manned by pro-government Sunni fighters near the city of Tikrit.

In western Iraq, three army intelligence soldiers riding a vehicle were stopped by gunmen near a protest site in Ramadi. In the gun battle that ensued, the soldiers were killed and two gunmen were wounded.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

The current wave of violence in Iraq has left more than 170 people dead over the past five days.

Martha Stewart's online dating profile: What it might have said ...

Martha-Stewart-Match.jpg

Image Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Bad news for men aged 65-80 in the New York metropolitan area: Though 71-year-old domestic goddess Martha Stewart apparently considered joining Match.com recently, she never fully took the plunge.

?I had a longtime boyfriend. That ended a couple of years ago. I haven?t found the next Mr. Right,? Stewart told Matt Lauer during a?Today show interview that will air next week. ?I was even thinking of going on Match.com!? Even more surprisingly, Stewart said that she wasn?t planning to use an alias or a misleading photo on the site ? ?I want to do my real thing,? she explained. Anyone else think this sounds like the premise of an upcoming Nancy Meyers movie? (Naturally, Martha?s played by Diane Keaton.)

Alas, we?ll never know what delights Martha?s online dating profile might have contained. ?I tried filling out the application,? she confessed to Lauer, ?[but] I started to laugh halfway down the page. It was impossible!?

Martha, Martha, Martha! If you were having trouble, why didn?t you simply crowdsource this task? Sure, you?re into the whole ?do it yourself? thing ? but if there?s one thing we youngsters have mastered (besides how not to get a job), it?s crafting exquisite online dating personae. Our advice ? fire up your old account, delete whatever?s on there, and replace it with this:

Username: msstewartifyourenasty
Headline: Ready to stop focusing on my salad.
Relationships: One ex-husband; one relationship with Anthony Hopkins, ended swiftly after I saw The Silence of the Lambs (for real).
Have kids: Yes, one ungrateful daughter.
Ethnicity: Whitest woman alive.
Body type: Candice Bergen-esque.
Religion: Cleanliness is next to godliness.
Smoke: Do you mean trout? If so, yes.
Drink: As long as homemade rhubarb syrup is involved.
About me and who I?m looking for: I live for hot glue guns and cold sparkling wine cocktails. I love to laugh, though I don?t much care for Jon Stewart (no relation). I need a man with a steady hand (to assist with gift-wrapping), a taste for adventure (in case of future flirtations with pole dancing class), and an open mind. Note: No stockbrokers need apply.

Making A Difference With Your Internet Marketing By Using These Tips

Start Making A Difference With Your Internet Marketing By Using These Tips

Marketing online today is one of the most important things you can do for the success of your business. Promoting your business online is critical to success these days. This is the time to go ahead and do it. The article below contains some methods for effective Internet marketing.

A quality website is vital to a successful website marketing campaign. Have a schedule for website testing to help find any link issues, graphic problems or bugs in general. If your visitors are not able to get around your site, they will not buy from you.

When doing online marketing, offering your visitors discounted prices is one way to encourage them to purchase from you. Indicate the discount by positioning a lower price adjacent to the suggested retail price of an item. One more example of this concept is to state ?Instead of paying $45, if you order now, you pay only $25?.

TIP! To promote your product to the audience before the sale, introduce them to a page that is specifically about the merchandise, like a video. This will give them more information and they will be better able to decide if they should purchase the product.

It is important to keep track of online sentiment whenever you have an event or promotion running. This allows you to tailor your future strategies more effectively. When you have launched an event online, initiative or promotion, look on blogs, forums and other sites to get feedback on how your visitors have responded. You will want to follow your customers advice to make them feel appreciated.

Consider marketing your website as a forum or social gathering spot instead of just another business website. This can hep build traffic to your website as customers come back to interact with others. You will be on the minds of your customers as well. You could promote the community through a member logo that can be utilized by your most avid website socialites. Best of all, it?s free advertising!

People will relate to your product more if you utilize emotional descriptions within your advertisements. This is on of the best ways to allow people to recognize your brand. Use language that consumers will view as favorable.

TIP! By having a good internet marketing plan, it will be easy for you to know what type of products are profitable. Your most profitable items on your site can serve as tools to increase sales.

Don?t count on Web marketing alone for your income, rather remember to diversify. You want to do this because you do not want to risk money that might not come back to you. Keep working at your regular job until you are bringing in enough income to quit.

A feedback box at the bottom of an ad copy can be implemented, allowing consumers to provide you with information as to why they chose not to purchase from you on that day. Perhaps there was something about your ad copy or your guarantee that they did not like.

Write relevant content and submit it to article directories online. Always include a link to your site along with a small blurb about your business and your expertise and experiences. Ask the editors if they would accept some free products or commission on affiliate work if they will put your articles on their site.

TIP! It is in your best interest to try get your customers emotionally involved with your service or product. Get your reader to think about how much easier their life would be when they use your product.

Entice customers away from competitor?s websites by giving them something inexpensive, but new and different. Try drawing cartoons that relate to your website or product, or providing an e-book full of useful information. Giving people items that they cannot find anywhere, but your site is a great way to market.

Consider limited time promotions in order to entice your customers. Consider offering a special discount or free gift to people who buy your products within a certain time frame. But it is important that urgency is created to get the people to act right away.

Make your website engaging and interesting. Your website is the first impression of your business. Interesting articles and a user friendly design will go a long way in keeping visitors on your site. A poorly designed site is a fast way to chase off potential clients.

TIP! Personalize the correspondence you have with consumers. People don?t like receiving bulk emails addressed to ?Dear Sir/Madame? or ?Hello Friends!? Are you sick of spam emails from companies? Targeted, personalized emails will make your business stand out from the rest.

Use persuasive words in your emails to customers, encouraging them to take a specific action. Things that you could encourage your customers to do might include purchasing a product or service, subscribing to an ezine, or contacting a company. You can then see how effective your email was by measuring your response rate.

Testing your email marketing will help you decipher what works and what doesn?t in terms of getting action from your customers. A/B testing is an option that is frequently utilized. Develop an email campaign, then change one thing in the email itself. You can change up things like subject lines, calls to action, or even the introduction paragraphs. Distribute the emails to comparable groups and measure the results. If one variation outperforms the other, then you know which one to use going forward.

You need to analyze your website with a critical eye. Are you having fun; or does it leave you feeling frustrated? Is the material that you present legible? Are orders easily placed when customers are in a hurry? It is a waste of time and effort to strive to bring new visitors to your site if your website is uninteresting or the layout is confusing. Potential customers can be turned off by these types of sites, and this can result in lost sales.

TIP! Don?t forget the little details on your web pages. You should have a section on each page that serves to give information to people about the site.

Choose a domain name that is easy for people to remember. Try to use your brand or your business name as your site?s name. While any interested person can simply Google your business?s name, an easily recognized web address will go a long way in helping your customers commit it to memory.

You may need to shell out a few bucks to get a great domain name. It?s probably going to be difficult to get the domain name that matches your company name. You can find one that will be close, though it will cost you around $1,000 ? $2,000 to obtain it.

TIP! Do you need a good online marketing idea? If you want to increase the opt-in list of your website, provide your visitors with an incentive to give you their email information. For example, offer a contest or a free item when they allow you to send them future emails.

Hopefully, this article has made it clear how important Internet promotion is for an online business owner like yourself. There are a number of methods you can employ. You can also learn a lot about how to make this work for your business. Apply what you?ve just learned, and you?ll be a success in Internet promotion in no time.

Berlusconi says Italy will get government Saturday

ROME (AP) ? Former Premier Silvio Berlusconi says he thinks Italy will finally get a government Saturday, a broad coalition that brings his conservatives back in power.

The media mogul also told journalists in Rome Saturday he wouldn't be part of the Cabinet headed by a center-left leader Enrico Letta.

Letta, who is a nephew of a longtime Berlusconi adviser, met earlier with the ex-premier for two hours as the rivals haggle over Cabinet posts.

Elections in February yielded political gridlock, leaving Letta 's Democratic Left party fractured and making runner-up Berlusconi kingmaker, since the center-left needs backing from his center-right bloc for a Parliamentary majority.

President Giorgio Napolitano, who agreed to serve an unprecedented second term, gave Letta the task of trying to assemble a stable coalition.

Apple iPhoto (for iPhone)

It will come as no surprise that one of the slickest iPhone photo apps comes from the tech design leader: Apple. The company's iPhoto app for Mac OS X broke new ground in cool photo app interface features like skimmable gallery thumbnails and organizing your pictures in "Events." You get iPhoto for iPhone and for iPad with a single $4.99 purchase at the iTunes App Store. Of course, you can do a lot more with a tablet's bigger screen size, not to mention the much larger size and input capabilities of a desktop computer, but Apple nevertheless manages to make a lot of what makes iPhoto great available on its smallest screen.

The iOS version of iPhoto even adds a cool sharing feature you don't get on the desktop iPhoto app, the Photo Journals online Web photo galleries. It also takes advantage of iCloud Photo Streams, an extremely convenient way to get your photos to appear on all your Apple devices?and even on your Windows PC with iCloud installed.

Since it's what Apple calls a "universal" app, iPhoto for iOS works on the iPhone 4 and later, the iPod touch 4th generation and later, and the iPad 2 and later.

Interface
Nobody does interfaces as beautifully as Apple. Occasionally, the beauty and slickness of the interface design can actually make it less clear, until you get the hang of it.

iPhoto's remarkable user interface features multitouch gestures for photo correction, brushes for applying effects onto specific areas of a photo. Some nifty organization tools include the ability to identify similar photos with a double-tap, as well as to flag, favorite, or remove images. As with any good photo editor, iPhoto offers a simple button that takes you right back to your original image view.?

Interface
The home screen in iPhoto for iPhone looks different from that of the iPad version. Instead of the tablet's tabs, it shows five buttons across the bottom: Albums, Photos, Events, Journals, and Settings. The first shows your standard iPhone photo albums, including Camera Roll and Photo Stream. Tapping Photos displays a thumbnail grid all the photos on your device, and tapping on any of these opens a full view of the photo, with a filmstrip of the rest in the album sliding along the bottom of the screen?or along the left if you hold the phone in landscape view.

An "i" button shows info for the photo at hand, including any comments on Facebook or Flickr if you've previously shared it there. A Settings option lets you turn on Help overlay tooltips that explain exactly what each button does. One button at top right lets you quickly view the original image after any amount of edits.

You then tap the Edit button to start working on an individual image. This doesn't change the interface drastically, but just adds different buttons along the bottom, for Auto-Enhance, Rotate, Flag, Favorite, and Tag. But in front of all those is a suitcase button?representing your "toolkit" of photo-editing tools. These include Crop & Straighten, Exposure, Color, Brushes, and Effects. I would have preferred to see more than one Auto option, however, with different options separated out for brightness, color, and so on.

Basic Photo Adjustments
Adjusting your photo's exposure is handled in a way that's innovative for the touch interface: A bar along the bottom represents the image from its darkest to lightest tones, and you can either use controls on this bar or swipe up or down anywhere on the image to increase or decrease brightness, and right or left to do the same for contrast. It's sort of a histogram without the graph. The Apple-award-winning Snapseed for iPad uses a similar swiping approach, but both have the drawback of not letting you zoom while in this adjustment mode.

The artist's palette icon offers the four adjusters shown along the bottom?saturation, blue skies, greenery, warmth. ?Just swipe up or down to increase or decrease saturation and left and right to change hue. The tool is intelligent enough to adjust greenery if you start swiping on the grass, or warmth if you swipe on a person's skin. If you place your finger on sky blue, the option changes to darken or brighten the intensity of the sky?a nice trick.

A settings gear icons offer a healthy selection of white balance options?sun, clouds, shade, flash, face balance?or you can choose a neutral point in the image for a custom white balance. The face balance option can find a face in your photo and balance the rest of the photo based on that.

Cropping and straightening is also cleverly implemented. You can pinch and zoom within a set crop frame, or resize the frame with or without preserving aspect ratio. But neatest of all is the ability to level by holding the iPhone at an angle after tapping on the compass-like control below the photo. This takes advantage of the device's accelerometer. You can also just twist two fingers on the photo (the way most people will probably do it).

Google Glass' vision of the future runs on 2011's smartphone chips

Google Glass may represent the future of wearables, but its components are a vestige of the past -- 2011, to be exact. That's according to developer Jay Lee who dug up some interesting Glass tidbits using Android Debug Bridge. Taking to his Google+ page, Lee verified that Google's smart eyewear currently runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich - a fact CEO Larry Page has apparently fessed up to -- incorporates an OMAP 4430 processor running at an unspecified frequency and is paired with about 682MB RAM (out of a likely 1GB), though it's not clear if this is a dual-core setup. For non-mobile industry historians, this particular Texas Instruments OMAP chipset hasn't been used since the Droid Bionic and Atrix 2 in 2011, making it relatively ancient by industry standards. So, what other surprises lurk beneath the Glass? We'll leave those mysteries to our EIC Tim Stevens to suss out in his Glass diaries.

Wedding music from an iPod - Artipot

The uncertainty of the economy hasn't spared anyone. From industrialists to the common man, everyone is interested in the phenomenon of cost cutting. As a result of this, even soon-to-be married couples are being affected. Budgets allotted to weddings have come down drastically. Cost cutting for weddings is on in full swing, be it the food or the music. Yes! Even for the wedding music, couples insist on looking for options that don't tax their pockets. The first and foremost thing to do in such cases is to remove the live music element from your celebrations. Don't be disheartened. You will still have options like recorded music and your own playlist. Like a host of other things, even wedding music can be managed using the Do it yourself technique. All you need to tune in your I-pod.

The friendly music devoice of yours is capable of pulling off your entire wedding by playing mesmerizing music. All such variants fall under the recorded music. Advantages of making this choice include it being a cheaper option along with ensuring that the music played will always be of your preference. You will also have to be careful to hand over the responsibility to someone who has proper knowledge of the device as well as your choice. Else a wedding ceremony with recorded music can become quite a pain to hear.

Here are a few tips to ensure that the wedding ceremony planned with recorded music goes smoothly

1. Choose someone who knows how to manage the device, be it a simple iPod or a relatively larger sound set-up. A little compromise in making this choice can lead to several disasters in the wedding so be careful.

2. Load the iPod. All your favorite songs and wedding tunes that you have in mind will need to be recorded or loaded into your device set up for the D-day. Ideally, we would recommend that you start building multiple playlists almost a month in advance. Ensure that the driver or person you are going to choose to manage the music on your wedding day is also around when you build the playlist. It becomes easier for them to know the preference of the bride and groom.

3. Have music for every category. Always remember, a wedding is not just about two people in love wanting to get married. It is also about families and relatives who come from far off to be a part of your celebrations. Therefore ensure that your music list has something to entertain them as well.

4. Avoid repetition! This is a crucial rule to remember when you are having recorded wedding music. How much ever you may like to hear a song million times, your guests are not going to appreciate it more than once. Your guests should be inspired to dance by the music and its ambience. But if they hear repetition it is surely going to put them off.

5. Rehearse the music. Okay, so you have decided to record wedding music. But that doesn't mean you take things lightly. Rehearse the various playlists just to ensure that the choice sounds right and the device works well.

Lastly, remember to have a back-up plan ready. After all, it's an electronic device and you have no control over the last minute electrical faults that may creep in.

PFT: Jets reportedly?eye?Geno? |? He'll be there

LukeReuters

For months, it was assumed the Chiefs would take tackle Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft.? Last night, the reality become otherwise.

The Chiefs bypassed Joeckel for Eric Fisher, and Joeckel won?t forget it.

?I wanted that first pick but, you know, it didn?t happen. And that definitely puts a chip on my shoulder,? Joeckel told PFT on Thursday night, after he was picked.? ?I?m ready to go work, I?m ready to go prove myself.? It kind of hurts even more that another offensive tackle was taken before me, so I?m ready to go. . . .

?I?ll probably wake up every single day thinking that and when I?m in the weight room . . . when I?m lifting, when I?m out in the field working, you know, that?s my entire goal.? I grew up in a very competitive family, always wanted to be the best.? And you know, going behind another guy in my same position is definitely going to push me.?

It also puts pressure on Fisher.

?Obviously the first pick gets a lot of expectations, a lot of pressure, but I think I perform very well under pressure,? Fisher told PFT on Thursday night.? ?I am somebody to take advantage of pressure situations and make the most of them.? A lot of people will break under their pressure, I?m not that kind of person.? I think any time in my life I?ve had that kind of expectation that I needed to meet, I think I?ve performed very well.?

There?s a chance both will perform well.? There?s also a chance, in theory, of a Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf dichotomy.

After spending time last night with each guy, our money?s on the former.

Heroku Launches Europe Region In Public Beta, Expects To Be Safe Harbor Certified Soon

heroku_europeHeroku, the popular cloud platform as a service company, today announced the public launch of its Europe region. Developers will now be able to deploy their services closer to their European customers, which should result in markedly reduced latency for them. The company says it has observed performance improvements of 100ms or more per request for European end users. Heroku is built on top of Amazon’s EC2 platform, so while the company doesn’t explicitly note this in its announcement today, this means it is using Amazon’s data center in Ireland for this service. In the U.S., Heroku’s services are currently based in Amazon’s North Virginia (US-East-1) data center. Given this launch in Europe, it’s likely that Heroku is also looking into expanding its U.S. presence to more data centers across the country, too. Developers, the company says, will also be able to easily deploy more than 60 add-ons from its marketplace in this new zone. Heroku will automatically deploy these in the same region the app is running in, too. The company previously offered this service as a private beta for a small number of users, including Swedene’s TV4 and Betapond. “Deploying our app closer to our users in Heroku’s Europe region gave us a 150ms improvement in web performance. Based on this win for our users, we?re moving all of our apps to the Europe region,” TV4′s CTO Per ?str?m said in a canned statement today. Safe Harbor Coming Soon One issue for U.S. companies that want to bring cloud-based services to Europe is the fact that they have to comply with the EU’s privacy protection laws, which tend to be a bit more strict than similar laws in the U.S. The EU?s Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to non-European Union countries that don’t meet its privacy protection standard. To ensure that this won’t hinder cloud-based services too much, however, Europe allows U.S. companies to be certified to ensure that their privacy policies are compliant with European regulations. Heroku says it is “not yet a registered participant in the Safe Harbor program,” but the company has “laid the groundwork for becoming Safe Harbor certified and expect to have it soon.” Until then, developers have to assume that some of their data will be stored in – or pass through – Heroku’s U.S. data centers.

Chevy Spark EV rated 'most efficient' retail car with 82-mile range, 119 MPGe

Chevy Spark EV rated 'most efficient' retail car by EPA with 82-mile range, 119 MPGe

All EVs have their own particular merits: some climb, some race, some only have three wheels, and some are even prone to melting. Chevrolet's Spark EV may not have any of these credentials, but now it's found the right feather to fit its cap as the "most efficient" retail car. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the Spark has a combined city / highway range of 82 miles on a full charge of its 21 kWh battery, and has given the vehicle a rating of 119 MPGe (a gasoline-equivalent figure). As Autoblog notes, Honda's Fit EV will go 82 miles on a smaller 20 kWh battery but, once the regulators have done fiddling with digits, it only scores 118 MPGe. That's the efficiency number that matters, and whether you're saving the world or just trying to save money, every mile counts. You'll be able to put that EPA rating to the test this summer when the Spark EV goes on sale in California and Oregon, but until then, check out the official certificate below the fold for more juicy details (read: efficiency stats).

Officer Dang Van Hanh said Monday the live snakes were taken to a wildlife rescue center near the capital where they treated before being released into the wild.

King?cobras?are the world's longest venomous snake, and grow up to 5.5 meters (18) feet.

The meat of the king?cobras?is considered a delicacy by some in Vietnam, where hunting and trading the snakes is banned. The snakes are also sometimes preserved in traditional medicines.

The snakes, which were kept in green sacks, were seized Friday.

Hanh said the car driver told officers he was paid to transport them. Local media reported he was paid under $50.

Amputee marine visits survivors in Boston hospital

>>> still very groggy from anesthesia and before he really knew he was a double amputee as a result of the boston marathon bombing, 24-year-old jeffrey bauman who had been waiting at the finish line to cheer on his girlfriend wrote on a piece of paper bag, saw the guy. looked right at me. and with that the fbi knew they had a witness who could identify one of the bombers. today jeff bauman visited 18-year-old sidney corcoran at boston medical center . sidney was hit by nearly fatal shrapnel and celebrated her birthday today in a hospital bed beside her mother's hospital bed. her mother celeste lost both of her legs below the knee. joining me now, captain cameron west who visited sidney and her mother. captain, tell me what you had to tell these victims of the boston bombing?

>> yes, sir, mr. o'donnell. number one, it's an honor to be here in support of those that were injured, and to tell you, we went up to boston to try to motivate and show those that were injured a little bit of what they might experience in the next couple months and year with their amputation. and in turn we actually were motivated by these people of all ages, and that is what compelled us to get up there, and we were actually the ones that, you know, got that out of the visit.

>> and so you as a marine were injured in combat and you suffered amputation yourself, didn't you?

>> yes, sir. at the end of 2010 , foot patrol , i was leading my platoon through the sangan valley, and we hit an ied. my injuries were amputation right above the knee and extreme damage to my right forearm and hand and loss of vision in my right eye.

>> captain, your vision -- experience fascinates me, because i had a friend who was a combat veteran and lost a leg, and i invited him to talk about how life goes on. he can dance and ski and so many things. let's take a look at the video of you visiting the hospital.

>> obviously she got her pretty looks from you, huh? great to see you. you look good.

>> thank you.

>> you look real good.

>> thank you.

>> this doesn't matter. this is just a change of scenery. it really is. g gabe here, he's moving and running, he's doing the pair olympics. you may want to do that someday.

>> my sister did her first boston marathon this marathon. i've lived in this area my whole life. i've always watched the marathon. i've never actually come to the marathon to watch it. and i was so proud of her. she wasn't, you know, a born runner like some people are. she worked so hard to do it, and i was so proud to be there to cheer her on. and she, you know, was coming around to boyleston street. she didn't actually get to finish the race because of the bomb and everything. and so after -- was it matthew? her 11-year-old son said, mom, are you going to run the race again next year? and she said, yes, and then she was telling me the story. i always joked around like i'm not super athletic. i like to work out and stuff, but running has never been my thing because i always get the most horrible shin splints . so i was like, hey, i don't have shins anymore. i can do this.

>> that's a good attitude right there.

>> captain west, you know that they can have complete lives ahead of them, but sitting there in those hospital beds today, i golt to say, i would have -- if i was in one of those beds, i would have trouble believing you.

>> yes, sir. and it's totally understandable. it's just the human factor of the whole situation. i mean, two years ago i was in their position, you know, and i thought that i wouldn't be able to be who i wanted to be, you know, later if life or right here in the present. and that's not the case at all. with technology, support system and just drive and determination, i've actually done more in the past two years than i've done, you know, in my entire life just, you know, being in activities, skiing, snowboarding, climbing mountains. anything that's unimaginable is definitely doable. and that's what we're trying to do to these victims that had a great loss of a leg or both legs, is just to show them that, hey, in a year, two years from now, you're going to be up running and gunning just like we are, and you're going to be where we are, and you're going d to be supporting somebody that just had a life-changing experience, and you're going to be their inspiration. like i said, when we went there to be the inspiration, we got more out of the trip than we could have ever given any of those that were injured.

>> i'm sure you did. marine captain cameron west, thank you very much for joining me tonight, but more importantly, thank you very much for going to boston and telling them your story.

>> it's my honor.
