Mexican presidential favorite vows to restore peace

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexican presidential front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto vowed to subdue the violence engulfing his country as the campaign for the July 1 election kicked off with the ruling conservatives struggling to hold onto power.

Pena Nieto, of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), is the hot favorite to succeed President Felipe Calderon, whose term in office has been dominated by the government's struggle to bring brutal drug cartels to heel.

Addressing a crowd of around 30,000 supporters in the western city of Guadalajara after midnight, Pena Nieto promised to restore peace in Mexico and end the criminal violence that has claimed over 50,000 lives in the last five years.

"We're starting a campaign to win the presidency of the republic, but more importantly, we're starting a movement to wake up minds to change Mexico," he said in a square in the old colonial part of Mexico's second city.

"Mexico has been wounded by the lawlessness and violence," Pena Nieto added, dressed simply in a white shirt and dark trousers. "Many people's lives are afflicted by worry, and what's worse, they're living in fear."

Calderon's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, has been battered by the bloody clashes between drug cartels and security forces, and its failure to reduce the number of poor and create enough jobs for Mexico's growing population.

Roughly half of the country lives in poverty, which is blamed for fuelling the violence that has rattled tourists and investors on Calderon's watch.

Calderon, who is barred by law from seeking a second term, staked his reputation on defeating the drug-trafficking gangs, but his army-led offensive has only led to more murders, kidnappings and robberies.

Drug-related murders leaped from 2,826 in 2007 - Calderon's first full year in office - to 15,273 in 2010, and by another 11 percent in the first nine months of 2011, government data shows.

For more than two years, the race to succeed Calderon has been led by the 45-year-old Pena Nieto, who was governor of the State of Mexico next to the capital between 2005 and 2011. Pena Nieto said he would lift 15 million people out of poverty, improve education and triple economic growth to create jobs.

"We need someone who really knows how to govern, and he is someone who can," said social worker Graciela Gonzalez.

His cause has been aided by voter fatigue with the PAN, which has failed to live up to the high hopes Mexicans had when the party in 2000 ended 71 years of often corrupt PRI rule.

PAN: NO DEALS WITH CRIME

Poll after poll has given Pena Nieto a double digit lead over PAN rival Josefina Vazquez Mota, despite a string of gaffes and the revelation in January that he had cheated on his first wife and fathered two children out of wedlock.

Vazquez Mota, the first woman to be nominated for the presidency by one of Mexico's three main political parties, also kicked off her campaign at midnight, in Mexico City. Addressing a much smaller rally at PAN campaign headquarters, the petite Vazquez Mota pledged to continue the party's firm line on crime.

"For me there's no option. Negotiating or making deals with criminals is criminal itself. I'm not going to make deals with criminals," she said, playing upon PAN claims that the PRI has in the past forged accords with gangsters to keep the peace.

And there would be no return to the past, she added.

"We won't be subject to authoritarianism again. We won't accept a Mexico of corruption and impunity again," she said.

Yet the PAN, a party once renowned for its disciplined, united front in presidential campaigns has been rocked by in-fighting and scandal, damaging her bid.

Pena Nieto's other main adversary, the 2006 runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is campaigning hard again for the top job after claiming he was robbed by Calderon six years ago.

But the fiery leftist alienated many former supporters with massive street protests he launched in the capital after that close result, and he trails in third place.

Holding a brief news conference early on Friday, Lopez Obrador dismissed the polls as "media propaganda" and insisted only his campaign represented the possibility of real change. Pena Nieto he dismissed as "corruption incarnate."

SYMBOLIC LOCATION

Pena Nieto's choice of Guadalajara to launch his campaign was no coincidence: the city is famed as the home of Mariachi musicians and is the capital of Jalisco state where tequila comes from, a potent symbol of all things Mexican.

Jalisco is also the most populous state governed by the PAN and one of only three where the party has had held power continuously for over 15 years. Pena Nieto was sworn in as PRI candidate in one of the other two PAN strongholds, Guanajuato.

Federico Berrueto, director general of polling firm Gabinete de Comunicacion Estrategica (GCE), said the choice of locations showed the PRI was taking the fight to the PAN in its own back yard in the hope of not just winning, but winning big.

Roberto Ramos, a 20-year-old business student, one of around 20 million voters who were too young to vote when the PRI was last in power, said a vote for the party was a vote for change.

"All politicians are thieves but at least the PRI can bring order to the country. The PAN government is too weak," he said in Pena Nieto's home turf, the State of Mexico.

Fueled by a string of state election victories and Pena Nieto's commanding poll lead, PRI leaders hope the party can secure enough seats in congress to form the first majority in 15 years, improving its chances of passing quick reforms.

The PAN, on the other hand, is struggling to hold itself together. This week, the party lurched into a fresh row when a leaked recording emerged appearing to show Vazquez Mota accusing the government of bugging her phone calls.

Pena Nieto's job is being made easier by the fact Vazquez Mota does not appear to have the full backing of Calderon, whose influence on the PAN's internal election process has undermined her standing as the party's candidate, said Berrueto of GCE.

"If you'd asked me a month-and-a-half, two months ago if she could win, I'd have said she had a chance, but if you asked me now, I'd say her hopes are very slim," he added.

Angry Birds? Maker Rovio Ups Its Game, Buys Futuremark?s Games Studio

unstoppablegorg-gamesRovio has made a killing out of its Angry Birds franchise, and today it announced a deal that points to how the mobile games maker is hard at work developing what could well be the follow up to that: it has bought Futuremark Games Studio, the gaming arm of software developer Futuremark. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The team behind Futuremark Games Studio, based in Finland like Rovio, are all coming over in the deal. Games the developer has made include Unstoppable Gorg and Hungribles, as well as Shattered Horizon -- which, like Angry Birds Space, plays with the zero gravity concept.

TechNotes: Can't find your cell? - Business Management Daily

We won?t ask if you do it ? but here are the latest stats on where most people are really using their cellphones.

The marketing agency 11mark re??leased a survey that found 75% of those who use mobile phones do so while in the bathroom. For those under age 35, the number jumps to 91%. And 25% say they won?t go to the bathroom without it.

Seems these secret toilet texters among us do everything from talk to text to shop to just surf the web while in the bathroom. And it?s equal between the sexes.

Sixty-three percent report they have answered calls, with another 41% saying they have initiated a call, while seated there. It gets worse: 20% of males have at one time joined a conference call from the toilet. Thirteen percent of women have participated in meetings from the loo. That works out to every fifth male co-worker, and every eighth female colleague. Makes you want to think twice about pushing the FaceTime button unless you call ahead.

Android users are more likely to use their phones in the bathroom, followed by BlackBerry users. iPhone users are the most likely to use an app or check Facebook.

The ?IT in the Toilet? study is based on an online survey of 1,000 Americans with mobile phones.

Lopez denies 'secret wedding' to Smart

JENNIFER LOPEZ has dismissed reports she's secretly wed her toyboy lover CASPER SMART.

The superstar found a photo of herself on the cover of this week's (begs19Mar12) Star magazine alongside the headline, "J.Lo Married in Mexico!".

The accompanying article alleges the singer/actress married dancer Smart in a low-key ceremony onboard a yacht - with no guests in attendance. The story also suggested Lopez had signed a prenuptial agreement promising her new husband $1 million a year for the next decade.

But Lopez - who split from her third husband, salsa singer Marc Anthony, last summer (11) - has brushed off the new tabloid claims.

In a Twitter.com post on Thursday (22Mar12), she writes, "I keep seeing something about getting married. Surprise, surprise "they" are wrong...AGAIN. #boredtweet".

It's the second time Lopez has had to deny rumors she's heading down the aisle again - last week (ends18Mar12), she shut down false allegations claiming she had asked fashion designer Roberto Cavalli to create a new wedding dress, insisting the style guru's Twitter.com page had been hacked.

The Distinctions Of Online Businesses | Internet Business ...

Starting an online business has become a very popular venture in recent years as more and more people become acclimated to using the Internet in their everyday lives. As little as twenty years ago, the Internet was new to the average consumer and not much more than a novelty; today, it?s rare to encounter a home in the Western world that?s not stocked with at least one computer. Most middle class houses in America have multiple computers at this point.

What this means is that starting an online business can be profitable if done correctly, given the predominance of the Internet in the average household. People who are naturally entrepreneurial or those who have already started a non-internet based business will definitely have a leg up on the rest of the game, but for the right person who?s willing to take appropriate steps to ensure success, starting an online business can be easy, fun, and even profitable.

In general, the differences between online business and traditional businesses are slight but distinct. Here are a few things that potential online business owners should take into consideration before jumping on the Information Superhighway:

Lower start up costs/high effort. One of the greatest things about online businesses is that they typically don?t cost much to get started. There?s no need to rent out a space or pay utilities, and there are lots of free avenues to advertise with over the digital waves. However, don?t be fooled into thinking that ?less money invested means less work,? because nothing could be further from the truth. Online business owners often feel like their computers are grafted onto their hands!

Be a jack of all trades. It?s not good enough just to have a stellar idea or a fantastic service. In order to be successful, you need to be able to do graphic design, understand web server technology, programming, and knowledge of the Internet as a marketing medium. For those that can?t do all of this single handedly, outsourcing is an option, but this raises overall cost.

Think globally. This isn?t opening up a small Mom and Pop store in your neighborhood. The business will be able to reach all corners of the globe, thanks to the Internet. The good part is that this potentially means more business ? the bad part is that owners will have to make provisions for costs such as international shipping, and maybe even pay for translated versions of their websites.

Marketers make the market. There are thousands of ways to market on the Internet, including pay-per-click, viral, drip, social networking, AdWords, and many others. Don?t know what these things mean? Owners of successful online businesses take the time to learn!

Some of these attributes make working online easier, some may prove to be more of a challenge ? but they all make online businesses unique!

Autism activist Temple Grandin inspires in H.B. | grandin, autism ...

HUNTINGTON BEACH ? Without any pleasantries or small talk, Temple Grandin jumped right in.

She switched from slide to slide in a power point presentation outlining the different types of autism, how to recognize the signs and, more importantly, how to help children with the disorder achieve their goals.

"You've got to stretch these kids," she said. "No surprises. You've got to push them."

Grandin, 64, knows what it means to push through the frustrations of autism and Asperger's.

She has written several books about her own experiences and was the subject of an Emmy-winning HBO film, which is what drew the large crowds of parents, students and those who work with autistic children to her talk Wednesday night at the Huntington Beach High School gym.

HBReads, a community group that promotes cultural understanding through books, hosted the appearance.

Grandin spoke less about her book, "Emergence: Labeled Autistic," and more about how life is perceived by someone with autism and how she worked to achieve success.

Grandin has a PhD in animal science and is a professor at Colorado University. She also created a method of herding cattle used in the meat industry that helps reduce the amount of stress put on the animals when they're being handled.

She was named a "Hero" in Time Magazine's 2010 list of the 100 most influential people in the world and is considered one of the most famous and accomplished people with autism.

For her Huntington Beach appearance, Grandin wore all black, with a collared shirt with embroidered cream flowers and tied a bright red scarf around her neck. She spoke quickly and matter-of-factly, with a hint of a drawl.

The audience laughed and leaned in as she spoke. Sometimes her words were abrupt and shocking, but mostly they were wise.

Fountain Valley residents Lisa Adams and her son Jason, 11, attended the talk.

When it was over, Jason stuffed his hand in his sweatshirt, put his chin up and said, "I figured out what I have."

Jason has autism. He is good with numbers and loves to draw. He especially likes to sketch Chinese dragons and dinosaurs and he wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up.

Lisa Adams said Grandin's talk helped her and her son better understand the type of high-functioning autism he has and some methods to help him overcome obstacles.

"Some of these things I had never heard before," Adams said. "Now we have another thing to look into to help our son."

Huntington Beach occupational therapist Michele Gerrity, 33, works with autistic children and others with disabilities. She said Grandin's lecture offered a unique insight into her work.

"It really is interesting to hear this come from someone with autism because sometimes children who have autism don't have the language to tell you," she said.

Grandin advocated for more understanding in schools and for parents to get their children off video games and interested in hands-on activities.

She believes children and teens should have jobs to teach responsibility and accountability. She also stresses teaching manners, etiquette and self-reliance.

"My 1950s upbringing taught me social and job skills," she said. "It's OK to be eccentric, but dirty and rude is not OK."

Her mother pushed her to work. She grew up in Boston, learning to sew as a teenager and went to stay on her aunt's ranch, where she discovered a love for farming.

Fear was a big obstacle Grandin had to overcome in her younger years, and the push from her mother helped her discover her calling to animal science, she said.

Grandin said she hated high school. Weathering the every-day ridiculing was a constant challenge.

"High school was horrible," she said. "I was teased."

But she made it to college, where she became empowered. She earned a bachelor's degree at Franklin Pierce College and went on to get her master's degree in animal science from Arizona State University and her doctorate from the University of Illinois.

She started drawing cattle herding methods and wanted her theories to be put to use.

"The only way I could get people to pay attention to me was to show them my drawings," she said.

Grandin's method is used by many in the industry. She serves as a consultant for the livestock industry, lending her expertise on animal handling and facility design.

Grandin said the most important part of her books and presentations is to show children and young adults they can achieve whatever they decide they want to.

"There is still a lot of discrimination out there," she said. "People get hung up on the labels, they don't see the person.

"(I want) to show them they can do it."

Grandin's talk will be broadcast on HBTV3 and can be viewed online on the city's website surfcity-hb.org.

Molecules to Medicine: "Conscience" Clauses versus Refusal: An Historical Perspective

The struggle between conscience and refusal, or individual rights vs. that of the community good, goes far back, and is not limited to reproductive choices. It also forms the foundation of civil rights rulings?prohibiting discrimination and segregation, and discrimination based on race or religion. Unfortunately, there are still ongoing battles regarding discrimination based on sexual orientation.

In Benitez, Doctors at the North Coast Women?s Care Medical Group denied Ms Benitez infertility treatment because she is a lesbian, ?claiming that their personal conservative Christian beliefs gave them a right to withhold care that they routinely provide to heterosexual patients.? The California Supreme Court issued a ?unanimous, landmark decision that lesbians are entitled to the same treatment as other patients and that constitutional protections for religious liberty do not excuse unlawful discrimination.?

?Conscience,? or personal beliefs, was also used to deny care to HIV/AIDS patients. I started practice well before HIV-AIDS was recognized, when little was known about its transmission. I clearly recall the struggles both of patients and of health care workers who wanted to refuse to provide care to AIDs patients?either because of their religious beliefs or because of their own fears of becoming ill. Despite these concerns, it was demanded that health care workers care for all, and put the patients? needs first.

We have always had societal expectations for the behavior of physicians and the presumption that they would put patients needs first. For example, British apothecary William Boghurst wrote of those who fled London during the Great Plague in 1666, ?Every man that undertakes to be of a profession or takes upon him any office must take all parts of it, the good and the evil, the pleasure and the pain, the profit and the inconvenience altogether and not pick and choose; for ministers must preach, captains must fight, physicians attend upon the sick?. ?

The AMA code of 1847 similarly asserted the physician?s duty to treat, ?And when pestilence prevails, it is their duty to face the danger and to continue their labors for the alleviation of suffering, even at the jeopardy of their own lives.? This was later altered to give greater weight to physicians, who shall, ?except in emergencies, be free to choose whom to serve.? Especially since the HIV/AIDS era began, the consensus has been that along with whatever benefits and status being a physician brings, is also a unique social responsibility.

Most recently, the issues of conscience and responsibility came to the forefront during the SARS and Ebola epidemics, and during the aftermath of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. In a thoughtful post, ?Virulent Epidemics and Scope of Healthcare Workers? Duty of Care,? Daniel Sokol provides a more nuanced exploration of competing duties?to patients, but also to their families and other responsibilities. He thus argues that the duty to patient needs must be put in the context of the other responsibilities and especially of the level of risk.

In each of these historical cases and discussions regarding the duty to treat, the only exceptions have related to health care worker?s personal risk, usually due to epidemics. Nowhere has there been sanctioned denials of care?and even emergency medical care for (miscarrying) women?because it offended a provider?s beliefs.

An illuminating comparison can be made between women?s healthcare issues and other issues that some in our society find morally or religiously objectionable. In an excellent post, ?Not all Choice is Free,? Louis A. Ruprecht appropriately concludes, ?The question that should be asked is why the US Catholic Bishops are exerting so much energy and money and time on the matter of contraception, with no similarly public cries of outrage against the death penalty, state-sponsored torture, or the two preemptive wars in which the U.S. has involved itself for fully a decade. Clearly there is a lot more to this debate than the First Amendment. It has to do with one of the most powerful patriarchal religious organizations in the world?be sure to recall that the bishops are all men, every last one of them?placing itself squarely in opposition to women?s sexual equality and autonomy.?

In 1985, a North Carolina resident withheld a penny from his taxes to protest the death penalty and execution of Velma Barfield. He claimed ?a religious exemption from paying for state services to which he was opposed on moral and religious grounds. The state?s answer was simple in the spring of 1985: you don?t get to pick and choose the services you pay for, regardless of the reason.?

Catholic hospitals provide 20-30% of the hospital care in the United States. Religious health systems received more than $45 billion in public, taxpayer-supported, funds, including Medicare and Medicaid funding. The Catholic Health Association, for example, also receives huge tax breaks as a ?non-profit, charitable? organization. Thus, religiously-affiliated health systems have an enormous influence on health care, especially in rural areas, where they are often the sole provider.

Particularly in light of the 1985 court?s decision in the death penalty tax case??you don?t get to pick and choose the services you pay for, regardless of the reason,??and given the huge amount of public monies they receive, should religious health care institutions be allowed to impose their beliefs on others? Should their beliefs trump the medical needs of patients who are seriously ill and may not have anywhere else to go for care? There is simply no precedent for such a demand based on personal beliefs.

Refusal clauses deny our patients the care that they need. They are not benign clauses, euphemistically referred to as ?conscience? clauses. They are, instead, unconscionable clauses, shirking the professional responsibility to put our patients first.

(AP) ? A gunman on a motorbike opened fire Monday at a Jewish school, killing a rabbi and his two young sons as they waited for a bus, then chased down a 7-year-old girl, shooting her dead at point-blank range. It was the latest in a series of attacks on minorities that have raised fears of a racist killer on the loose.

Authorities said the same weapon, a powerful .45-caliber handgun, was used in two other recent shootings in southwestern France, also involving an assailant who fled by motorbike. Those attacks left three people dead ? military paratroopers of North African and Caribbean origin.

The shootings echoed across a nation that has been focused on an upcoming presidential race in which issues about religious minorities and race have gained prominence. President Nicolas Sarkozy ? facing a hard re-election battle ? raised the terrorism alert level in the region to its highest level, while also noting a possible racist motive.

"This act is despicable, it cannot go unpunished," Sarkozy said in a prime-time address to the nation. "Each time this man acts, he acts to kill, giving his victims no chance."

Monday's attack was as quick and methodical as it was terrifying.

At around 8 a.m., with more than 100 students and other worshippers inside a synagogue adjoining the Ozar Hatorah school, the gunman coolly got off his motor scooter. He opened fire at 30-year-old Jonathan Sandler, a rabbi who taught at the school, and his sons, 4-year-old Gabriel and 5-year-old Arieh, while they waited for a bus to a Jewish primary school across town.

As the shots rang out, panicked students darted inside the school grounds and the attacker chased them, witnesses said. At one point, he grabbed the principal's 7-year-old daughter, Miriam Monsonego, by her hair, shot her in the head and fled.

Cries of, "There are shots! there are shots!" rang out in the synagogue, recalled a 29-year-old neighbor who gave only his first name, Baroukh. He said some children took refuge in a basement.

Nicole Yardeni, a local Jewish official who saw security video of the attack, described the shooter as "determined, athletic and well-toned." She said he wore a helmet with the visor down.

"You see a man park his motorcycle, start to shoot, enter the school grounds and chase children to catch one and shoot a bullet into her head," Yardeni said. "It's unbearable to watch and you can't watch anymore after that. He was looking to kill."

Toulouse Prosecutor Michel Valet said a 17-year-old boy was also seriously wounded.

"He shot at everything he had in front of him, children and adults," Valet said. "The children were chased inside the school."

All of the dead were dual Israeli-French citizens, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said. By 8 p.m., as a dozen police blocked access to the school, cries again echoed from within as community members mourned over the victims' bodies before they were to be flown to Israel for burial.

Authorities immediately increased security at schools and synagogues around the country. The attack revolted France, where school shootings are extremely rare, and drew strong condemnation from Israel and the United States.

France has suffered bouts of criminal anti-Semitism over the years, often targeting synagogues or Jewish cemeteries. Monday's slayings were the deadliest to target a Jewish site since Palestinian militants shot and killed six people in the popular Jo Goldenberg deli in Paris' Marais district in 1982.

Officials in France have been particularly sensitive toward the Jewish community because of the country's World War II past of abetting Nazi occupiers in deporting Jewish citizens.

Sarkozy and his main challenger, Socialist Francois Hollande, rushed to pay their respects in Toulouse. In Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral hosted a special Mass to honor the dead. Schools across the country planned a minute of silence in commemoration on Tuesday.

In France's increasingly tense and raucous race to the presidency, the subject of immigration ? a buzzword that has often served as a cloak for racist sentiments ? has taken a central role. Critics have accused Sarkozy of taking a hard-line tack on the issue to siphon off votes from the far right.

His conservative government was on the defensive on Monday, emphasizing their response since the first shootings on March 11.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant, a close Sarkozy ally, said some 200 investigators have been assigned to the cases, though there were "no clear leads" and it wasn't clear if the assailant was acting alone.

Sarkozy said 14 riot police units had been assigned to "secure the region as long as this criminal" remains at large. The terror level was raised to scarlet ? the highest level since the four-point system was created in 2003.

In the wake of the shootings, the New York Police Department stepped up security at synagogues, and U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned an "unprovoked and vicious act of violence" in France.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the attack.

"It's too early to say what the precise background for this act of murder is, but I think that we can't rule out that there was a strong, murderous anti-Semitic motive here," Netanyahu said.

A police official said the same .45-caliber handgun used in Monday's attack was used in the shootings four days earlier that killed two paratroopers and seriously injured a third in nearby Montauban, as well as an attack that killed a paratrooper eight days earlier in Toulouse.

In Monday's attack, the killer also used a .35-caliber gun, firing at least 15 shots at the school, police officials said.

"The shooter is someone used to holding weapons," said Nicolas Comte of the SGP FO police union. "He knows what he's doing, like an ex-military guy."

Sarkozy said that Monday's shootings and the earlier paratrooper killings appeared to be motivated by racism.

"Of course, by attacking children and a teacher who were Jewish, the anti-Semitic motivation appears obvious," Sarkozy said. "Regarding our soldiers, we can imagine that racism and murderous madness are in this case linked."

France is home to Western Europe's largest Jewish community, estimated at about 500,000, as well as its largest Muslim population ? about 5 million.

Toulouse, a southwestern city north of the Pyrenees mountains, has about 10,000 to 15,000 Jews in its overall population of 440,000, said Jean-Paul Amoyelle, the president of the Ozar Hatorah school network in France. He said its Jewish community is well integrated into the city.

After Monday's shooting, six bullet holes pierced the high, white aluminum fence next to the school's entrance, at the spot where the rabbi and his sons were killed. One officer held a distraught girl, her face in her hands. A boy in a yarmulke and his mother walked away from the site, their faces visibly pained.

Corinne Tordjeman said she had just dropped off her 14-year-old son, Alexandre, when the gunman arrived. Her younger daughter was supposed to go to a birthday party this weekend with the girl who was killed.

The killer "knew that killing Jewish children would make a lot of noise, but tomorrow it could be a Christian, a Muslim, or anyone else," she said.

Baroukh said he had spoken to Sandler only moments before the attack.

"I said "Bonjour" to him like normal," he said. "Then he went out into the school entrance. I heard the shots and I turned around and saw him on the ground ... I panicked and started running away."
