Audi Announces Revamped T-Mobile Data Plan

?

With data rapidly becoming the next frontier for automotive shoppers, buyers weighing the cost of in-car wi-fi might be drawn to the just-announced alliance between Audi and T-Mobile.

?

Using the Audi connect software which was first introduced in 2011, the automaker's in-car multimedia interface enables a range of Google-based informational services like weather and POI searches, as well as Sirius XM traffic and wi-fi for up to eight devices. While Audi's standard monthly rate of $30 isn't all that attractive, buying in bulk pays: with a $450, 30 month plan, the monthly rate drops to $15, offering "virtually unlimited data access." The fine print suggests that data speed could get throttled with excessive usage, though we're guessing it would take some seriously heavy download volume to get cut off.

?

For comparison's sake, other industry extremes range from Chrysler's UConnect, which requires a hotspot accessory for an extra $412 with access fees ranging from $15 per day to $50 per month, to Lexus' new HD Radio-based system, which bundles a predictive traffic-based nav feature for free. That said, is Audi's data offering worth the fifteen bucks a month? For road warriors who spend a good portion of their waking hours behind the wheel, the answer just might be "yes."
